Actress Jennifer Lawrence can’t seem to get the 2017 psychological horror flick, Mother out of her head. One scene in the movie made her feel so bad that she would never want to go back to that place again.
The movie received a lot of backlash for the brutal violence it depicted, but this Darren Aronofsky thriller revealed the depth of Lawrence’s acting skills. While the actress, who is known for her outspoken personality, won’t go to such an awful place again, she will definitely treasure her fans’ praise for her performance in the film.
The scene that drained Jennifer Lawrence emotionally
Jennifer Lawrence has revealed the emotional and psychological drain that she suffered while filming Mother in multiple interviews. But it was one scene that put her in an awful place mentally.
The specific scene is where Lawrence, who plays the character of the mother, finds her baby brutally murdered. After spending the first half of the film trying to have a baby and caring for her newborn, her character then witnesses the terrible murder of her son.
The viewers literally hear the harsh sound of bones crushing, after which the mother finds the carcass of the baby. A large group of people are eating the baby’s pieces in front of his mother.
While filming the scene, Lawrence damaged her own diaphragm from hyperventilating on set. The team stopped the production for a while so that she could be put on oxygen. Talking about her experience about the Mother, Lawrence said,
“I’ve never had to go this dark before. So I just kind of lost control of myself. I tore my diaphragm and popped my chest rib out. I don’t know if I’d ever work with Darren again.”
The actresses’ comments on the movie highlight the challenges of an actor while working in an intense film like Mother. Fans find it challenging to watch psychological horror, but it is far more challenging to act.
How was the film received?
The movie, Mother revolves around the lives of couple Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence, who are referred to as Him and Mother.
The movie crossed $44 million in worldwide box office collections against a production budget of $30 million. While it crossed $17 million in the United States and Canada.
Critics and viewers alike praised Aronofsky’s direction and Lawrence’s performance in the lead role. However, biblical allegories and depictions of violence were particularly criticised.
