Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s star-crossed love story started in The Amazing Spider-Man where they played Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker, respectively. Their chemistry on-screen thrilled fans all over the world, which eventually blossomed into a real-life romance. Unfortunately, the couple split on April 2015.
During the filming of the Marvel-Sony movie, fans would remember that Andrew Garfield used an American accent to completely embody Peter Parker’s identity. Although he was born in California, the Spider-Man star was raised in the UK.
Andrew Garfield Surprised Spider-Man Co-Stars With His British Accent
Emma Stone was so used to Andrew Garfield’s new accent that she forgot he was British. The actress told Shortlist via FemaleFirst:
“Once the movie was over, I was surprised to hear his completely British accent because on set, obviously, we were speaking in American accents, so in between takes he was pretty American.”
Even Zendaya, who played MJ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy, was surprised by Garfield’s accent after he reprised his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Zendaya told Variety:
“Maybe my memory deceives me, but I want to say we were on the set for Spider-Man, and I kept forgetting that you were English because you spoke in your American accent the whole time, and I was like, ‘Oh s***!’”
Garfield admitted that maintaining the American accent made it easier for him to remain in character. He thought it would make things simpler and would not confuse people.
Emma Stone Polished Her British Accent For A Movie Role
Emma Stone was so thrilled with Andrew Garfield’s British accent that she also tried playing around with it and practicing regularly. The actor remarked Stone’s accent was impressive (via MTV News):
“It’s not bad, I know. I would never say this to her face, but it’s not bad. I always try and discourage whenever she does it, but between you and I – and obviously the people who watch this interview – she can do it pretty well.”
Stone’s attempt to learn the British accent was only for fun, but little did she know it would come in handy after she landed a role in 2018’s The Favourite, a movie set in 18th-century England. Stone had to brush up on her accent by listening to and studying English actors. She told Louder Than War:
“I sort of started listening to some more modern accents, like Carey Mulligan’s accent. She has a deep voice, and I love her, so it was easy to watch her interviews. I’m not trying to talk like her, it’s just keeping her depth and the cadence.”
The 34-year-old star revealed that she incorporated the accent into her everyday life:
“For the most part, I just tried to put my hat on and try to go into Ubers and taxis and try to speak the accent.”
Emma Stone will reprise her role as Estella a.k.a. Cruella de Vil in Disney’s Cruella sequel, which is reportedly in early production. Meanwhile, the Oscar-winning actress is set to appear in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, coming into theaters this September 8, 2023.
