Tom Hardy’s Darkest Past
Tom Hardy walked a hard road recovering from the darkest time of his life. The Venom actor’s addiction to alcohol and drugs has immensely affected the actor to a great extent. The intensity of the substance abuse was so deep that the actor later revealed, “I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack.” The actor found himself in alcohol and crack cocaine addiction after he was expelled from his boarding school for stealing which pretty much dominated the actor’s life until his mid-20s.
When working on Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down in 2003, the Venom actor woke up in his own vomit in a crowded city after the previous night’s party. The doctor who treated him showed the path to his sobriety.
“I was a shameful suburban statistic. I was told very clearly, ‘You go down that road, Tom, you won’t come back. That’s it. All you need to know.’ That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am fucking lucky to be here,” Hardy once said.
The actor has been sober since his rehabilitation in 2003 but the horror of the past still haunts him. “I did something particularly heinous that allowed me to wake up,” he said. The 45-year-old actor is a father of three children now and he is dedicated to family and work ever since.
Tom Hardy’s Road to Sobriety
Hardy’s road to sobriety was never easy. The actor was ashamed but he thought he would cheat and quit rehab. “I went in thinking I’d do it for a little bit until I can go out and drink and people forgive me,” Hardy said. “But I did my 28 days, and after listening to people who had been through similar circumstances I realized I did have a problem,” he added.
“I’m just a frightened bloke. Everything scares me. Not being in control, not knowing, anticipation, waiting for something to go wrong.”
Hardy shares a son, Louis Thomas Hardy with his ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed and with his wife, Charlotte Riley, he shares a daughter and a boy. The children are also somewhat responsible for keeping the actor on a focused and right path. “I wouldn’t say having children saved my life, but it definitely changed my life,” he said.
“That was when the penny dropped that there was no longer very much time for me to think about myself anymore — about what I might like to do or who I want to be — because there is somebody now on the planet who really needs me to get my act together and focus on something that is more important than me.”
The actor has been sober since he was 25 and is now dedicated to a healthy and sound life with his family.
Hardy will appear in the Untitled Venom: Let There Be Carnage sequel which is scheduled for a 2024 release. The actor will also appear in George Miller’s Mad Max universe film Furiosa, which will hit the theatres on 24 May 2024.
