However, the series finally ended in 2021, and fans definitely weren’t happy with the Mangaka Hajime Isayama. It received a lot of hate, and Isayama was painted in bad light. The ending messed up with fans so much that they created their own “fan-made ending” for this series and requested the Mangaka to give an alternate ending to the series.

Attack on Titan ends with Mikasa kissing Eren’s decapitated head, which she got by entering the Founding Titan’s mouth. The kiss was a portrayal of one final goodbye for him from her.

Mikasa takes Eren’s head to Armin, and both of them mourn the loss of their beloved friend. Eren’s actions inflicted a lot of damage upon humanity, and everyone was against him. Mikasa wanted him to get a proper burial, and she had to get away from the battlefield with his head without alerting anyone. Following the obliteration of Eren and the Founding Titan, Eldians became normal humans again, and the entire power of Titans vanished from their world.

The ending was rather satisfactory at first glance, as Eren lost everything to finally make a world without the Titan, but fans pointed out several plot holes and scenes that did not add up.

Attack on Titan was the Best Seller in the New York Times for over 100 weeks. Despite his popularity, this 36-year-old manga artist made his first-ever appearance at the Anime Convention held in the United States. Isayama was quite anxious to face his fans. Before the convention started, Kodansha got a statement from Hajime Isayama on his Instagram,

“I am aware that the ending of Attack on Titan was quite controversial. I am open to receiving people’s honest opinions. However, I would appreciate it if you’d be kind to me.”

The conclusion of his series got him quite nervous, and he told Anime News Network, “bearing the burden of wanting to live up to fan expectations but also to go against them.” He also opens up about his messed up sleep schedule. He wasn’t able to draw because he was getting just two or three hours per day.

Some asked Isayama at the convention panel about how he wanted the series to end, to which he replied,

“This is what I wanted to do. From the very beginning, I knew where this series would land but details like how the main character would get there weren’t determined.”

“I still have my doubts within myself if I did it right,” Isayama shared his dilemma regarding the ending and talked more about the situation he was in, “I still struggle with this point, and I’m really sorry about it.”

Fans at the convention panel expressed gratitude towards the Mangaka and appreciated his hard work and determination to end the Manga. Isayama also responded to them with respect and thanked them for believing in him when no one else did.
