Fans were excited about the casting for Sony’s Madame Web, especially with Sydney Sweeney’s addition to the ensemble, taking on the role of Julia Carpenter. Sweeney became a sensation following her performance in the critically acclaimed HBO series Euphoria. The White Lotus actress will be sharing the screen with Dakota Johnson, who plays the titular character, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
Enthusiasm runs high for this movie which is the fourth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a shared universe with Marvel’s MCU. Sweeney recently opened up about her role and she might have subtly shared her opinion about a particular Marvel decision.
Sydney Sweeney on Her Role in Madame Web
Sydney Sweeney‘s initial response to signing up for the film was one of awe. Being a dedicated actress, she dived into comprehensive research for her role. The Reality actress said to Variety:
“I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”
Despite recent challenges faced by superhero films at the box office, The Voyeurs actress boldly shares her optimism about Madame Web’s success. The 25-year-old actress asserts:
“I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be. Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”
However, the tabloids did pick up on a specific remark she made regarding purchasing every comic related to her character. Some interpreted Sweeney’s words as a veiled jab at the $29B franchise, which reportedly advised the Secret Invasion director not to consult the comic books.
Sydney Sweeney’s Comments Amidst Marvel Asking Director Not To Read Comics
While Sydney Sweeney could dive into the entire Marvel comics to study her character for the movie, the same cannot be said for Ali Selim, who directed the critically panned Secret Invasion. In an interview with IGN, the director revealed that Marvel executives advised him against reading the comics before making the show. Selim said:
“When I took this job, the first thing Marvel said to me was ‘Don’t read the comics, they have nothing to do with this series’. The series was more born out of the electric relationship that was created between Nick Fury and Talos, or Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, in Captain Marvel.”
In hindsight, this approach from Marvel may not have been the wisest. The Secret Invasion comic storyline revolutionized the narrative by revealing longstanding Marvel heroes as Skrulls, leading readers to question whom to trust anymore.
Sweeney’s commitment to honoring the essence of her comic book character has garnered positive reactions from fans. As anticipation heightens, followers await the unfolding of Julia Carpenter’s journey in the Madame Web movie.
