Talking about the gloriousness of the Mike actor, Bullock stated that during the time of the #MeToo movement, there was no one that she saw as a gentleman other than Trevante Rhodes.

“You write this human being and in the time of the big MeToo thing, you get to experience a glorious man that I go, ‘That’s the man I want. That’s the father that I would want my children to have,’” Bullock said. “I wanted more of a love story, Susanne wanted more of a love story. I missed love stories, you know? According to reports by GlobalGrind, Sandra Bullock was so impressed with Trevante Rhodes that she stated that she would not do the Netflix film if Rhodes wasn’t hired to portray the character of her love interest.

“I walked away and I said, ‘If we don’t cast him, if we don’t make this deal, I’m just gonna…’ I was very dramatic. But to me, I said this is the story I want to tell and I want this human being to be my ride or die in the process.”

After being cast, the lead actors were indeed appraised for their roles as Bird Box went on to become one of the most unique takes on post-apocalyptic movies by Netflix. The film also relied heavily on the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes and in the promotional interviews, it seems that the actors had plenty of that.
