When Joss Whedon began re-casting Edward Norton he believed that Mark Ruffalo could pull off the act, but the actor surprisingly did not think the same. It took a lot of convincing to get him on board along with other Avengers. Mark Ruffalo portrays one of the most well-known characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Through the Hulk’s ripped physique, thick green skin, and excruciating fury, Ruffalo revealed a more complex persona to the audience.
Mark Ruffalo did not believe he could pull off Hulk in MCU
Although Mark Ruffalo is most recognized for playing the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he wasn’t always this self-assured and well-known before Marvel. When Ruffalo had been approached to play Hulk he had only worked in independent films. The Dark Waters star shares his hesitation to say yes,
“I was scared. I didn’t know what I could add to what I already thought had been done so well before me. I’d only been doing indie movies up until that point. So I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m the right person for this.’ And Joss Whedon’s like, ‘Yeah, you are the right person.”
He continues,
“I got a call from Downey, it must’ve made it to him that I was hemming and hawing, and he just simply said, ‘Ruffalo, let’s go. We got this.’ In true Iron Man fashion. And then after that, I was like, ‘I guess I have to do it.’”
Well if you get a call from Robert Downey Jr asking you to do something, you have no option but to comply, no one says no to him. And thank god Ruffalo complied, as this changed his career completely and it gave us one of the funniest, kind, and loveable characters in the MCU.
Mark Ruffalo feels Hulk should now have a solo film
Filling Edward Norton’s shoes is daunting as the Fight Club star is a tough act to follow, this was another reason behind Mark Ruffalo’s fear of taking on the role of Hulk. Talking to Variety, Mark Ruffalo shared his excitement and plans about the character,
“There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting. We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies.”
Mark Ruffalo has come a long way, from not believing in himself to wanting a solo film. Through the years the actor and character have evolved, and his confidence is also a result of Marvel’s success at the Box-office.
