Ben Affleck is coming back to the DCEU in the upcoming Flash film which is set to release this June. While fans are having mixed reactions regarding the film, the actor recalled his ultimate plan to face off against Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke in his unmade The Batman film.
The actor is known for his prominent works in the industry. He was first seen in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film. While rumors were surfacing about him getting a standalone film, it never got off the ground. However, recently he opened up about his plans for the antagonist in the scrapped film.
Ben Affleck Was Planning for a ‘Complex’ Villain in His Scrapped Film
The 50-year-old actor, Ben Affleck shared his ultimate plans for the villain in his film during his appearance at Zack Snyder’s Full Circle Justice League event.
The now-scrapped standalone film would have him as actor and director with actor Joe Manganiello portraying the antagonist, Deathstroke. As per The Direct, when he was asked about his plans for his unmade film, he shared,
“There were a number of them that I was kind of exploring. And, the plans were to make interesting, nuanced, complex characters, in particular to the character you mentioned.”
Sharing his version to create an antagonist for the film, he stated,
“I kind of feel like either you do – I’m just going to get into my own preference here – but either you do a kind of massive one villain that is so formidable you just can’t imagine how your protagonist is going to be able to overcome it. Or you have to really sort of populate kind of, you know, Injustice – these big group villains – where you have to get all these different characters.”
Not just that, he also believed that his vision for Deathstroke would have affected DCEU to its best.
Who is Deathstroke?
Deathstroke/Slade Wilson is a fictional DC supervillain who first appeared in The New Teen Titans #2 in December 1980. A talented soldier who masters all fighting forms and got chosen for secret experimentation.
That government experiment enhanced his abilities which then made him a metahuman soldier. He eventually became a deadly warrior who usually served as a prominent villain for the Teen Titans, the Titans, and the Justice League.
Regarding Affleck’s visualization of Deathstroke in the DCEU, he shared,
“So I was at the time really trying to hone in and focus on that character and get into depth and detail about it to make him seem as impressive as I felt there was the opportunity to do. That’s the only detail I have for you.”
While his version never saw the light, Manganiello’s version of Deathstroke appeared in Zack Synder’s Justice League. Meanwhile, Affleck will reprise his role in the upcoming The Flash which will be released in the United States on June 16, 2023.
