Angela Bassett has been on everyone’s mind recently. And if it was not for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the actress who has long-deserved the recognition that she has only now been getting, would not have been subject to this much negligence on the Academy’s part. However, the powerful and heart-wrenching performance that Bassett delivered on the sets of the equally emotional Black Panther sequel was a worthy movie to finally claim her long-awaited second nod from the Oscars.
Angela Bassett Finds Recognition Among the Greats
The cinematic equivalent of life, tragedy, and the paths that inevitably connect the elements together were what was portrayed in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And in Chadwick Boseman’s absence, his on-screen mother was the one who remained the thread that beautifully tied it all together. Queen Ramonda, played by Angela Bassett, emanated pain and grace in an unquantifiable performance, and in the end, it felt like the right time to let go.
Angela Bassett’s physical as well as emotional range, displayed within the 161-minute span of the film has held everyone by a chokehold since the moment she stepped on screen in the MCU sequel. Each dialogue and the delivery and the execution has been a callback to the terrifying grief and the gaping hole left behind in their leader and brother’s wake. If Ryan Coogler has been the helm steering the ship toward its destination, Bassett has been the hull and the anchor throughout the course of the project’s manifestation on the reel.
And if that is not considered worthy of an Oscar nomination, it would be a disappointment and a flaw that forever remained ingrained in the Academy’s long chapter of undeserving Oscar snubs.
Angela Bassett Addresses Her Oscar-Nod After BP 2
Since her Best Actress nomination, Angela Bassett has found the time to address her thoughts on the unforgivable lack of an Oscar throughout the span of her illustrious career.
“Well, it’s just been that long since I’ve had a role that would allow me to really showcase what I’m capable of. I’ve had a marvelous career. I stay working. But that particular role that grabs the attention of the audience and takes them on a journey? As our mothers would say, I can make a dollar our of fifteen cents. But it’s not that transformational kind of experience, or one that electrifies a group to vote for you. So, yeah, I didn’t really believe…”
And when it comes to the dialogue surrounding racism and the unhealthy relationship the socio-political subject holds with the Academy, Angela Bassett has a thought to share regarding that as well. Comparing the Oscar campaigns as it exists now with what existed 30 years ago, she claimed:
“I remember the N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards, and I remember the Oscar luncheon. But I was never invited to film festivals or anything like that. I had a lot of time to myself. So it’s a lot different now.”
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a tributary project formulated in the memory of Chadwick Boseman as well as a continuation of his legacy is now the recipient of four Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories.
