Diane Keaton Talks About Her Split From Al Pacino

Diane Keaton and Al Pacino first met on the set of the 1972 film The Godfather. The duo starred opposite each other as Michael Corleone and Kay Adams. The actress has shared that she had a “crush” on her co-star since she started working with him.

However, it wasn’t until the 1974 sequel to The Godfather that they officially started seeing each other. Talking about the Oscar-winning actor, Keaton stated, “I was mad for him. Charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker.” The Book Club actress has shared that The Godfather trilogy was “about one thing — Al [Pacino]” for her.

However, their relationship was cut short, and the couple broke up in 1990. During a 2017 interview with People, the actress revealed that she wanted to take their relationship a step further and expected Pacino to commit to getting married.

The Annie star has said that she “worked hard on that one.” However, The Godfather star did not budge, even after an ultimatum. After this, she decided to end things and move forward in her life. However, it doesn’t seem to happen for either of them, as both of them have remained unmarried.

Diane Keaton and Al Pacino’s relationship started on the set of The Godfather, and it ended with the film series as well. The threequel of Francis Ford Coppola’s film series was released in 1990, the same year Pacino and Keaton announced their split.

While the Poms star was heartbroken after her breakup with the Serpico star, she later shared that she understands his reasons, as a long-term relationship would not have been easy for him. “I don’t think a long-term happy marriage would be easy for him,” she shared during an interview.

Pacino has been in several relationships over the years. However, the 83-year-old actor never married. He is a father to four children, including a daughter with Jan Tarrant, twins with his ex Beverly D’Angelo, and recently welcomed a baby boy with his girlfriend, Noor Alfallah.

Keaton has also remained unmarried despite being in several relationships. The actress shared that she did not want to give up her independence and decided not to marry. Following her split from Pacino, she adopted her daughter, Dexter, in 1996 and her son, Duke, in 2001.
