Scarlett Johansson, the actress known for portraying powerful characters through every role that she plays also had to apologize once for her remarks. While in talks to perform the role of a transgender man in the 2002 movie Rub & Tug.
Talking about keeping her opinions and being the way she was, Johansson said that her opinions were a part of her. The Black Widow actress, however, did apologize for some of her controversial remarks made in the past and realized that they were indeed some sensitive statements.
When Scarlett Johansson Apologized For Her Offensive Comments
Back in 2002, Scarlett Johansson was initially offered the role of a trans man in the movie Rub & Tug. The role was soon taken away from her when she made some offensive comments about Hollywood when she was asked to step down.
While talking about the insensitive comments, the actress looked back at her past and even went as far as to give an apology for her remarks. While talking to The Gentlewoman, Scarlett Johansson talked about losing the trans man role and her apology that she had to issue soon afterward after getting involved in the controversies.
“I’m going to have opinions about things, because that’s just who I am. I mean, everyone has a hard time admitting when they’re wrong about stuff, and for all of that to come out publicly, it can be embarrassing. To have the experience of, Wow, I was really off mark there, or I wasn’t looking at the big picture, or I was inconsiderate. I’m also a person.”
The actress further talked about the numerous controversies that she had been involved with and the reason that she had to issue an apology. Although the actress was not entirely at fault, her statements were indeed considered offensive even though she may not have meant them.
Scarlett Johansson Admits To Her Insensitive Comments!
With the iconic role in question, the case is not as easy as it looks from the outside. According to the actress, she wanted to portray the role of a trans man since it would have been a challenging role for her.
Well, several media outlets pointed out that the actress wasn’t made for this role and should step down from Rub & Tug. The MCU actress, in return, stated that there were multiple people who were cis and yet portrayed the role of a trans man.
“Tell [media outlets] that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” she stated while noting actors who played transgender roles while being cis.
After receiving severe backlash from the people and stepping down from the project, the actress issued an apology statement wherein she deemed her words as “insensitive”.
“I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realise it was insensitive.”
With all the controversies in the past, the actress looks towards her booming career as she is attached to 7 upcoming projects in various stages of development.
