Being drunk on set is often challenging, not only can it interfere with acting but it can also lead to second-hand embarrassment. The 2013 comedy movie, Drinking Buddies had all the cast members drink real beer on set, for beer was apparently cheaper than water and the movie had a limited budget of just $1 million.

Hence, the movie’s lead, Anna Kendrick was terrified to be drunk, for she did not want to be labeled as a ‘difficult actor to work with’. In an interview the actress stated,

“During a scene where I’m playing cards with Jake, they gave me real beer, and I didn’t realize it! And so every time I lost, I was pounding beer, and I didn’t realize it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, ‘I’m super drunk right now!’ And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work. I was horrified by the idea that I was going to be the next troublesome star who got drunk and started flipping over tables or whatever. I just tried to sit quietly until I sobered up.”

While fans applauded Kendrick’s professionalism, they also criticized the makers for their questionable decisions and raised the question of them compromising their actor’s health and safety to prioritize budget constraints.

Alcohol interferes with emotions and actions. While some actors may find it calming to be drunk to deliver their scenes perfectly, Anna Kendrick found it unnerving to shoot Drinking Buddies while being drunk. She stated how uncomfortable it made her feel,

“It was very, very bizarre, let me tell you. I’m sure you’ve never been drunk in the middle of your job, but it is uncomfortable. For some of the movie, it was fine, and it worked in the scene, and so it was helpful for them. But I mostly found it really unnerving.”

Despite the challenge, the brilliant actress aced her role and perfectly portrayed her ‘drunk’ role.

Drinking Buddies can be streamed on Hulu.
