You can still lose your job, even if you are an acclaimed actor. The television show or movie they are cast in may suffer as a result of the actor’s behavior. For instance, James Remar was originally cast as Dwayne Hicks in James Cameron’s Aliens, but the troubled actor was replaced due to his crippling behavior off-set.
Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), a science fiction horror movie, was the predecessor to 1986 James Cameron’s Aliens. Cameron’s Alien sequel was an action-packed thrill ride with small-scale chases in favor of big guns and bloody mayhem. Whereas Scott’s original Alien was sparse, claustrophobic survival horror.
Michael Biehn’s portrayal of Dwayne Hicks, a tough but endearing presence who was popular with many Alien moviegoers, was one of the tough heroes in Aliens.
But the character was initially played by James Remar, who would have brought a darker perspective to the part. However, a string of unfortunate events led to Biehn’s eventual replacement of Remar.
Why Did James Cameron Fire Original Dwayne Hicks During Alien Filming?
If you enjoy mainstream movies from the last fifty years, you have probably seen James Remar in something. The well-known actor does not need an introduction, but we will still do it.
Remar has appeared on both the big and small screens. He is probably best known for playing villains, but you may also recognize him from his role as Officer Harry Morgan on the television series Dexter.
The Sex and the City actor was supposed to play a major part in one of the biggest science fiction films ever, but it never happened. James Cameron’s Aliens required Remar to spend a few weeks filming in London; however, after being caught with illegal drugs, the actor, 69. was fired.
Nevertheless, the stated reason at the time was “creative differences”.
Cameron, who is renowned for his unwavering dedication to excellence, made the difficult decision to part ways with Remar in order to preserve the integrity of his cherished franchise. The actor claimed he had to leave for personal reasons, but years later, he was honest and revealed:
“I had a terrible drug problem, but I got through it. … I had a great career and personal life, and messed it up with a terrible drug habit. … I was initially cast as Corporal Hicks, and I was fired after a couple of weeks of filming because I got busted for possession of drugs, and Michael Biehn replaced me.”
As one of the best science fiction, action, and sequel movies ever created, Aliens is now regarded as one of the best movies of the 1980s.
Other A-List Stars Who Were Fired During Filming
From her portrayal of Jane Foster in the Marvel movies to her Academy Award-winning turn in the suspenseful 2010 film Black Swan, Natalie Portman has established herself as a household name in the entertainment world. She worked on some of the biggest movies ever made even when she was just a young kid.
She was chosen to co-star with Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1996 film, Romeo + Juliet. The Titanic star was 21 at the time, and Portman was 13; they were 8 years apart in age. Thus, she was forced out of the project by this uneasy age difference.
At one point, Two and a Half Men was CBS’ most-watched program, and Charlie Sheen was the highest-paid actor on television. But, after making alleged divisive remarks, the actor was later fired from Two and a Half Men.
Columbus Short lost his role on Shonda Rhimes’ popular television show, Scandal, as a result of his wife’s allegations of domestic abuse.
Well, trial and error are common in the entertainment business. There are many factors that can lead to an actor losing a role, regardless of whether they are seasoned professionals or aspiring actors.
Anyway, you can stream Aliens on Hulu.
