It’s very hard for any actor to escape their legacy in today’s world. Especially if they had a role in a genre film that struck a chord with fans. Despite the fact that The Dark Knight Rises was released more than a decade ago, one actress continues to receive questions about it. Particularly, the sequel helmed by Christopher Nolan has her infamous death scene.
Even though the actress did a fantastic job as Talia al Ghul, audiences tend to only remember her death scene from the entire movie. The actress claimed that people’s response to the scene was overrated. She also discussed how difficult it was to be known for only one particular scene, despite all the work she had put into her career.
Marion Cotillard on Her The Dark Knight Rises Death Scene
The death of Talia al Ghul (Marion Cotillard) at the end of The Dark Knight Rises is undoubtedly one of the most widely criticized death scenes in recent years. Despite being an Oscar-winning actress, Marion Cotillard‘s death scene in The Dark Knight Rises has drawn a lot of flak.
The death was so widely criticized online that it ultimately reached Cotillard, who admitted a few years ago that she wasn’t too pleased with the outcome either:
“We’re all in the same boat, and if sometimes it gets out of control, then everyone is involved… Sometimes there are failures, and when you see this on screen, you’re thinking: ‘Why? Why did they keep that take?’ But either you blame everyone or nobody. But I thought people overreacted because it was tough to be identified just with this scene. When I’m doing the best I can to find the authenticity in every character that I’m playing, it’s tough to be known just for this scene.”
“Yes, it’s important to know how to laugh about this, and also, there are worse things in life… Even if there are things that can hurt you. But I wasn’t really affected by this. I just thought the reaction was disproportionate, and it helps to laugh about it.”
It seems that she thinks Nolan could have taken a different perspective. In case you don’t remember why it’s so hated, you can watch the scene all over again.
Marion Cotillard Praises Christopher Nolan
Marion Cotillard has been gushing about her experience with Nolan. She said, “The guy is so interesting,” back in June 2009, just before Inception filming got underway.
“He writes his own scripts. He seems to be, from what I saw and what I read, so rich inside. He’s got so many things to say and share and he’s a very, very smart guy. You really can feel it in his writing.“
She acknowledged to The Hollywood Reporter that she had mixed feelings when she was approached for the role in The Dark Knight Rises.
“I was so happy when he asked me to be part of the experience, and at the same time, I was a little sad because I couldn’t make it,” she said.
But Christopher Nolan was prepared to adjust Cotillard’s schedule since he was so committed to getting her for the role. She added,
“And so we had this conversation on the phone and he told me, ‘well, I’m in the middle of the writing and I’m gonna try to make it work.’ Of course, I feel so lucky that he wanted to work with me again and that he could do this for me.”
Cotillard undoubtedly enjoyed herself on the TDKR sets; it’s just unfortunate that her contribution was confined to one awful scene only.
