2013’s The Bling Ring was a movie about a group of teenagers who would find the addresses of the celebrities they were obsessed with and rob their houses. This movie is based on real events where teenagers, who believed they were obligated to the personal spaces of the celebrities they adored, broke into their houses and robbed them. Some of the victims of this were Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Paris Hilton, and The Lord of the Rings star, Orlando Bloom.

The movie was quite similar to reality and had quite a cast with Harry Potter star, Emma Watson starring in it. It also featured the actual victims who were affected by these robbers in real life. Quite a few of them agreed but one was against the entire idea quite publically.

Why Did Sofia Coppola Decide to Make The Bling Ring?

Sofia Coppola was the filmmaker behind this project. When she was asked why she wanted to make this movie, she said that she was quite fascinated with everything that involved this story. She mentioned when she was growing up, something like this was quite unheard of and was quite different as a teenager herself. So for someone to take teenage delinquency this far was intriguing to her.

She once said in an interview with IndieWire,

“When I read the story and learned that they were teenagers I did think about how different it was when I was growing up. We didn’t have reality TV or all those websites or the internet. And just the whole idea that anybody could be famous, and everybody is famous. That whole mentality was so different then.”

“Yeah, I was struck that they thought it was okay to just kind of go in and hang out in these houses and take things. I felt like with Twitter and social media that there are less boundaries and mystique. They felt like they knew these people. They felt like they could just kind of go in there and hang out. Yeah, I think that’s a recent feeling.”

She was also even more interested in this case because the culprits were teenagers, talking about how these days, with a person’s entire digital life, in the palm of our hands, one may get lost in the like between reality and belief.

Why Did Orlando Bloom Refuse to Appear in The Bling Ring?

In this movie, Sofia Coppola made the bold decision of casting people who were robbed by the real Bling Ring to play the victims in the movie. Many celebrities, like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, agreed and took part in the movie. One such did not agree to this. Orlando Bloom refused to be a part of this movie.

“Sofia Coppola is wonderful and I’d love to work with her. She asked me to cameo in the movie but I said it was too close to home for me to want to be involved,” Bloom stated, “I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot of people. It’s important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget,”

Bloom did not quite like the entire concept of this, stating it to be a bit too close to home for him. He went on to say that he believe this to be quite cold-hearted as the entire experience was quite traumatic for him and he lost quite a lot in said robbery.
