Captain Jack Sparrow might just be on the verge of making his grand comeback after 6 years.
The last film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was released back in 2017, grossing about $794 million in the global circuit. But there’s only been radio silence on the franchise’s end ever since then with no concrete updates on a sixth film to hold onto.
Luckily for fans, the producer of the fantasy swashbuckler film series has given a fresh update on the whereabouts of a new addition. And it’s safe to say that active development is taking place concerning Pirates of the Caribbean 6. The question of the hour though, is, will Johnny Depp return to the franchise or will another actor replace him in Pirates of the Caribbean’s future projects?
Jerry Bruckheimer Teases Fans With A New Pirates of the Caribbean Update
On the evening of the 95th Academy Awards, American film and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who welcomed his first Oscar nomination for Top Gun: Maverick, was asked about the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. And his reassurance about the sixth film in the series seems to be promising enough.
While Bruckheimer, 79, didn’t reveal much, he did remark how the studio already has a “great” script in the works so at least that’s something.
“We’re all working on it. We’ll see how it comes out. But we’re very excited, I think we’re going to have a great screenplay, and we’re getting close.”
Upon being asked if there was any hope for Johnny Depp to return to the franchise, the Top Gun producer admitted that he would certainly welcome him with open arms if he were to come back.
“We’ll see. I would love it. I would love to have him in the movie, that’s all I could tell you.”
Looks like the ball is in Depp’s court.
Will Johnny Depp Return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6?
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise consists of five adventure/ action films bordering on fantasy and supernatural elements. But the main highlight of all the movies is undoubtedly the protagonist, Jack Sparrow, a notorious and mostly inebriated pirate with a twisted moral compass who embarks on wild journeys and has countless enemies. And by adding his own personal touch of humor and wit to the character, Depp represents the role almost as if it’s a second skin.
The award-winning actor has portrayed the role on the screen with laudable consistency and genuine dedication toward the same. But back in 2018, when Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard indirectly accused him of domestic violence and abuse through an op-ed, Disney dropped the actor from the $4.5 billion franchise due to all the legal allegations swirling around him.
On top of that, there have also been new rumors sparking up about how former professional wrestler and Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has apparently been keeping an eye out for Captain Jack Sparrow’s role in Depp’s absence. However, neither Disney nor The Rock has confirmed or denied any of the said claims.
Hopefully, fans will get to see their beloved Depp as Jack Sparrow on the screens soon.
Pirates of the Caribbean can be streamed on Disney+.
