Top Gun: Maverick is one of the few projects which are dear to the Hollywood star Tom Cruise. He filmed the first part in 1986, and the sequel came out after decades. Cruise was one of the producers of the film, and Joseph Kosinski was the director. The film was a commercial and critical success. The film also earned an Oscar award. However, the preparation of Maverick was not a piece of cake. The actors had to follow a tough regime designed by the star himself.
Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman shared how Cruise brought authenticity to his film by making the actor follow the regime of real fighter pilots.
Lewis Pullman Reveals the Tough Regime Created by Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise is immensely focused and dedicated in the case of his movies. He makes sure that there are no loose ends and goes beyond limits to show authenticity in his films. One of the cast members, Lewis Pullman, opened up on the preparation for his character in the film. The actor shared that the cast members had to train like real fighter pilots. They had gone through rigorous training to make the flying scene as real as possible.
Lewis Pullman told The Ringer in May 2022,
“Tom had personally designed a training regimen that would basically condense two years of flight training into three months—and it was all done in a way that Tom had wished he’d had for himself on the original Top Gun.”
Pullman shared that there was a unique procedure put in place while filming the action movie,
“We would do these little surveys after each flight. You write down how many G’s you pulled, what maneuvers you did, and what challenges you may have had. In the beginning, we were all just filling them out not really thinking, Who is reading this?”
Pullman added that he was stunned that Tom Cruise himself checked the sheets of the actors,
“But whenever we saw Tom, he would come up to us and say, ‘Hey man, I saw that on your last flight, you had a little trouble pulling zero G’s. Here’s what I do.’ It was like, ‘Holy smokes, Tom Cruise is taking the time out of his jam-packed day to give me personal tips.’”
Lewis Pullman played the weapon systems officer Robert Bob Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick.
