The DC Universe is known to deliver various superhero films throughout its existence. These adaptations of DC comics have undergone significant evolution over the years. However, the recent phase isn’t going very smoothly for the franchise as with films like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, DC saw a drastic downfall at the box office.
Amidst these difficulties, a DC fan asserted that ‘Dark and Intense is not DC’s brand.’ In response, filmmaker David Ayer, who is associated with DC, came to the defense of the brand and argued that the DC identity encompasses a multifaceted range of elements.
David Ayer defends the multifaceted identity of the DC Universe
The DC Universe is known for its diverse range of iconic superheroes and supervillains, many of whom are household names today. There was a time when DC was at its peak after launching movies like Joker and The Batman.
These films are set with a dark theme and perhaps were the reason for the success of the franchise. Yet, not everyone agrees with this, as recently a DC fan claimed that ” Dark and intense is not the brand.”
To enlighten this fan about the themes of the franchise, the director of Suicide Squad, David Ayer, entered the conversation and clarified that DC is a multifaceted franchise that encompasses a varied range of themes, including the dark theme.
Ayer asserted that he grew up reading DC comics and admires the brand. The filmmaker denied the notion that “Dark and intense is not the brand,” as the majority of the DC films, especially those directed by Zack Synder, are based on dark themes.
Ayer’s response suggests that he firmly holds to the notion that DC is a diverse brand that covers a wide range of films. The filmmaker also mentioned his favorite films from the franchise that are associated with the dark theme.
David Ayer reflected on saving the drowning DC Universe
Looking at the recent release of the DC Universe, it is evident that the franchise is in trouble. Not only did the latest films witness a box-office downfall, but they also couldn’t meet the fans’ expectations.
While the co-CEOs of the DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran are trying their best to revive the franchise, director David Ayer has come up with an idea to save the DC Universe. Recently, when The Hollywood Reporter, tweeted asking, “Where Have All the DC Fans Gone?”, Ayer responded by suggesting that if filmmakers don’t refrain from taking risks, they may witness changes in the dynamics of the franchise.
Ayer also emphasized focusing on dark and intense themes, which may help in reviving the franchise.
