Quentin Tarantino’s connection with the late director Tony Scott extends beyond mere collaboration or shared professional backgrounds; instead, Tarantino highly admires Scott’s work. The director has often been vocal about his profound admiration for Scott, going so far as to consider himself a devoted fan of Scott’s craft.
Previously, Tarantino praised Scott’s work and said that throughout his directorial career, he didn’t receive the respect he deserved. The 60-year-old filmmaker also got emotional after watching Scott’s film.
Quentin Tarantino paid tribute to Tony Scott’s unrecognized brilliance
Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott shared a close and respectful professional relationship. Previously, the actor took time from his busy schedule and appeared at a double feature screening of True Romance and Domino, arranged by Backstory’s Jeff Goldsmith at the LA Film School in Hollywood. The filmmaker was present there to pay tribute to the late director Tony Scott. Tarantino expressed his admiration for Scott by stating, “I loved his sh*t.”
He also reflected on his experience watching Scott’s films like Man on Fire, True Romance, and Days of Thunder which moved him emotionally. Further, the filmmaker compared Scott with Douglas Sirk and said,
“He’s like Douglas Sirk, he never got respect, was too commercial, people put him down. Now they teach classes about him.”
Sirk was a filmmaker renowned for making films in the melodrama genre, that were often dismissed as ‘overly commercial’ films. Nevertheless, with time, Sirk’s work gained deserved recognition, and today he is celebrated as a master of the melodrama genre.
In his comment, Tarantino suggested that Scott faced a similar lack of respect for his films during his career. But now that there are classes that teach about Scott, his contribution to filmmaking is finally being acknowledged.
Quentin Tarantino claimed that he admires Tony Scott’s work
Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott once collaborated on the film True Romance. The film was both a critical and commercial hit. While the film was written by Tarantino, it was directed by Scott. According to Tarantino, he wrote the script, but when the final product came out, the story wasn’t the same. Tarantino sold his script to Scott, and Scott, who made the film, altered the film a bit. Surprisingly, Tarantino was pleased with Scott’s work on his script. The director said,
“Scott glossed up my script, made it too pretty, too vivid. That’s what makes it work so well, and the casting and performances he got.”
Tarantino and Scott collaborated just once and created a cult classic. True Romance emerged as a hit during its time, even though their partnership extended to this sole project.
