Kate Winslet physically and mentally pushed herself to her limits to bring her character Mary Anning to life. Set in the 1840s, Ammonite focuses on a paleontologist who lives in Britain at a time when the field was dominated by men. It focuses on her life as a now-celebrated paleontologist and her contributions to the field as well as her relationship with a young woman played by Saoirse Ronan. To bring authenticity to her character, Winslet revealed in an interview,

“I had to live a strange isolated life when I was playing her because when you are an actor they put you up in hotels and make it comfortable for you. I just knew I could not do really do that, because I had to do everything to be Mary and I got a bit method.”

She further revealed how she spent her time at an isolated cottage and ate soup to get into the mind of her character.

“It was so isolated, cold and rattly that when there was a big storm the waves would hit the windows of the house and the power would go down and I would lie there thinking, ‘Kate what are you doing?’ Just go to the hotel with everybody else. I would eat this weird soup, and walk around sketching things… it was ridiculous, actually.”

Despite the physically and mentally taxing time, her efforts paid off when Kate Winslet received widespread praise and acclaim for her effortless yet perfect portrayal.

Kate Winslet is no stranger to intimate scenes. Having performed numerous such scenes throughout her career but for Winslet Ammonite were the most comfortable ones she had ever shot. The film depicts a slow yet passionate relationship between Winslet and Ronan’s character. Revealing the details about the scenes, Winslet said that it was the two lead actors who choreographed the entire thing,

“Saoirse and I choreographed the scene ourselves….. I just think Saoirse and I, we just felt really safe. Francis (the director) was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out.’ And we did…. I mean, we marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative. I felt the proudest I’ve ever felt doing a love scene on ‘Ammonite’. And I felt by far the least self-conscious.”

Despite choreographing the entire scenes themselves, their relationship was lauded for its subtlety and powerful portrayal.
