In a world where many filmmakers play it safe, Abel Ferrara stands out as a true maverick. His willingness to tackle challenging and controversial subjects, his ability to coax raw and powerful performances from his actors, and his unique cinematic style all contribute to his greatness as a director.
Ferrara’s films are known for their unapologetic exploration of the human condition, often plumbing the depths of depravity and addiction. He forces us to confront the darkest aspects of humanity.
Abel Ferrara Opened up about Working with Shia LaBeouf
Filmmaker Abel Ferrara discussed his film Padre Pio, which stars Shia LaBeouf. During the making of the movie, the actor underwent a conversion to Catholicism.
“Shia LaBeouf believed in the project,” explains the director.
“He began to know Pio as he discovered his own Christianity. With this film Shia took the classic plunge into the dark, he jumped. He went to live in a monastery for months, he shared his time with his brothers. It was a very powerful discovery for him, for all of us.”
The movie, which follows Padre Pio from his early years until his first stigmata, was filmed in Puglia, Italy, in November 2021, where the actual events took place. Ferrara said:
“I didn’t know a lot about him. I don’t need to know about somebody’s work. I just go with my gut feeling man, especially with actors. I could feel it was right. I knew it was right. And he immediately jumped in his truck and took off for wherever, that mission outside of LA, with the Franciscan monks. And he just sat in the parking lot. Okay, finally they came out and said, ‘What are you doing?’ He said, ‘I’m gonna play Padre Pio. These guys, they’re not cynical, it’s not an attitude, so it’s like, ‘Okay, fine, come on inside.’ And then he began his new journey into Catholicism.”
Abel Ferrara was more intrigued by Padre Pio’s personality than the controversies surrounding him.
American-born Ferrara is known for cult movies such as The Bad Lieutenant (1992), King of New York (1990), Body Snatchers (1993), and The Addiction (1995).
But Brad Pitt Was Pissed Off at Fury Co-Star Shia LaBeouf’s Method Acting
Everyone on the Fury film set became frustrated with Shia LaBeouf’s distinctive method acting. Logan Lerman, who plays Logan in Fury, revealed in an interview that LaBeouf would cut his face, saying the makeup-applied scar did not seem natural. He added that he left the wound exposed throughout the filming.
Co-star Brad Pitt and the director David Ayer gave the actor a warning after the rest of the cast expressed discomfort with his behavior.
“Shia was warned about his behavior by several people on set, including Brad Pitt and director David Ayer,” a source told Dailymail.
However, Pitt was clear with his feelings on LaBeouf: “Oh, I love this boy. He’s one of the best actors I’ve ever seen,” Pitt stated.
“He’s full-on commitment, man. He’s living it like no one else, let me tell you. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great actors. He’s one of the best I’ve seen.”
LaBeouf carried on acting in the same way on the set of the film, and he even stayed away from the other cast members in a small bed-and-breakfast hotel.
