Filmmaking legend Martin Scorsese has been one of the biggest names to criticize Marvel movies and even went on to address them as “theme parks.”
The Avengers star, who has worked with the filmmaker in the 2010 psychological thriller Shutter Island, shared a piece of advice for the Scorsese as he responded to his statements during an interview.
Mark Ruffalo Responded to Martin Scorsese’s Marvel Criticism
Marvel Cinematic Universe has multiple critics. While fans of the MCU movies never hesitate to share their disappointment with a project they don’t like, the superhero franchise has also become a target of several filmmakers and actors in the industry as well. Many have stated that the craze surrounding superhero movies has restricted broader opportunities for others.
Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese also shared his criticism of the biggest movie franchise in the world during an interview with Empire Magazine. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” he said.
He also stated that despite trying, he could not see Marvel movies and said that those movies are not “cinema.” Many fans and the MCU stars came to its defense following his statement, and Mark Ruffalo also joined in the conversation during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
He suggested that the filmmaker should watch superhero movies, as he stated that they are a homage to the “cinema that he’s created in the past.” He further stated, “I worked with Marty, I love Marty, I hope he gets to see the film one day.” Ruffalo also suggested a solution to his issues during another interview.
Mark Ruffalo Suggests a Solution to the Industry’s Marvel Problem
Considering its popularity and huge fan following, most of the movies under the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been received very well at the box office, with Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War making over $2 billion worldwide.
Talking about the same during an interview with BBC, Mark Ruffalo once again shared his disagreement with Martin Scorsese regarding Marvel movies. He said, “If we’re living in a world where economics are how we measure the value of a society, then yeah, whoever makes the biggest thing is going to dominate.”
The Dark Waters actor stated that The Irishman director is suggesting to “subsidize” films. He also suggested Scorcese be a part of the solution and establish a “national film endowment” that allows new and young talent to come in that “isn’t just driven by the marketplace but driven by precepts of art.”
Having worked with the filmmaker on the 2010 psychological thriller, the actor has also shared that he would love to work on a Marvel movie with Scorsese, saying that he believes that the Oscar-winning filmmaker would make an amazing Marvel movie.
