Marlon Brando And Dennis Hopper’s Intense Argument
Marlon Brando And Dennis Hopper starred alongside each other in Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1979 war drama Apocalypse Now. Based on the 1899 book Heart of Darkness, the movie follows an American captain on a mission to find and assassinate a rogue colonel. However, according to the Speed actor, he and his co-star Brando faced a lot of problems working together.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hopper explained that before the Superman actor joined the cast on the set, he was doing specialized training based on a “little red book,” which was used by Green Berets. After Brando joined the cast, they all went to dinner, where the Waterworld actor said something that triggered his co-star.
“And I say to Brando, sitting across from him at dinner, I bet you haven’t read the book,” Hopper recalled, saying that Brando assumed he was talking about Heart of Darkness, on which the 1979 movie was based. He also shared that Francis Ford Coppola has also been asking him to read the book constantly.
Brando got furious, assuming that Hopper was also pointing out the same issue. “And he is screaming and yelling, ‘Why do I have to hear it from him? I have to hear it from this punk!'” he recalled sharing that the actor stormed out soon after that.
Marlon Brando’s One Condition to Star in Apocalypse Now
Dennis Hopper has shared that he only had one condition to work in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 movie. He wanted one line with his co-star Marlon Brando. However, The Godfather actor put a contrary condition after the misunderstanding caused during the cast dinner.
Hopper has shared that followed by that dinner, the director and Brando went on a two-week river excursion and completed the script of the movie. However, followed by the arguments at the dinner, The Score actor did not even want to be around his co-star.
Brando said that he would do the movie only on one condition. “‘I’ll work with him, but you come in and do your scenes first, and then I’ll come in and listen to you, but we’ll never be on the set together,” he told the filmmaker.
Apocalypse Now is available on Apple TV.
