Not Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac Wanted to Return to Another $51.8B Disney Franchise Under 1 Condition

Oscar Isaac, whose name was once synonymous with the courageous charisma of Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, seemed tired and uncertain as he closed the chapter on his Star Wars journey. Audiences were left wondering if the actor would ever return to the outer reaches of that iconic galaxy after his portrayal in the latest trilogy alongside Daisy Ridley’s Rey and John Boyega’s Finn won them over.

Oscar Isaac’s experience filming Star Wars was, without a doubt, an emotional roller coaster. He won the hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere with his portrayal of Poe Dameron, the charismatic pilot who was instrumental in the Resistance’s fight against the First Order.

Isaac, however, was at a crossroads as the final film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, signified the end of an era. The flash and glamor of Hollywood blockbuster production had worn him down, and now he yearned for a character-driven story that would give him room to delve into the finer points of his craft.

The star sought to expand into uncharted territory when discussing missing character studies and “handmade movies.”

“It’s not really what I set out to do. What I set out to do was to make handmade movies, and to work with people that inspire me… It feels like for me a personal turning point and that, as far as I’m concerned, it has nothing to do with the finished product. It’s the process of doing this.”

In an interview with SiriusXM in 2022, Oscar Isaac revealed a newfound enthusiasm for his role as Poe Dameron, which excited the fandom. When asked if he would like to return to Star Wars, Isaac confirmed he was “open to anything.”

“I don’t know. I’m open to anything. You never know. I have no real feeling one way or another. I’m open to any good story. Time is the one thing that becomes challenging…as you get older and kids and all that. Where do [movies] fit in? If there was a great story and a great director and [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] came to me and was like, ‘I have this great idea,’ then I’m so open to it.”

It’s clear that as long as the ingredients of a remarkable story and visionary direction are present, returning to Star Wars is no longer a distant dream but a tangible prospect.

Oscar Isaac finally found a place to satisfy his craving for character-driven stories and “handmade” filmmaking in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Isaac’s career changed significantly after his role as Moon Knight, a character known for navigating psychological complexities.

Isaac appreciated Moon Knight’s return to traditional storytelling while appreciating Star Wars for its galactic scale.

“Often on these big movies it can feel like you’re building the plane on the runway. The idea of getting back to ‘handmade’ films, character studies…I was desperate for that feeling. [‘Moon Knight’] felt handmade. And it’s the first legitimate Marvel character-study since ‘Iron Man.’ I thought, ‘Maybe I can hijack this thing. Maybe this is the chance to do something really fucking nutty on a major stage.’”

Oscar Isaac’s pursuit of authenticity and depth in storytelling stands out in a field dominated by CGI extravaganzas and spectacle-driven blockbusters. Nonetheless, moving from the intense space battles of Star Wars to the complex psychology of Moon Knight shows how determined Isaac is to carve out his niche in the industry.
