When you reflect on the Game of Thrones character Cersei Lannister, portrayed by Lena Headey, a particular significant sequence likely stands out. Interestingly, the filming process for this scene was as demanding as the scene itself.
James Hibberd’s latest work, Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, presents an oral history that delves into the inner workings of the entire Game of Thrones series, unveiling some of its most significant behind-the-scenes revelations. Among these revelations is the genuine narrative behind Cersei’s “walk of shame.“
Lena Headey Had A Tough Time Shooting Walk Of Shame
While the Walk of Shame may appear exceptionally harsh and extravagant, as highlighted by Hibberd, it has its origins in actual historical practices that author George R.R. Martin incorporated into his fifth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons.
Nevertheless, prior to commencing filming, the production encountered two significant challenges. Firstly, the city of Dubrovnik, which served as the backdrop for King’s Landing throughout seven of the show’s eight seasons, expressed discontent about the idea of filming a naked woman against their highly recognizable scenery.
Lena Headey had requested to have some clothing during the scene, but the producers insisted on staying true to the character’s nudity as described in the books. She explained her decision, saying,
“The thought of being naked for three days and trying to contain her in the way she would be… I think I would feel very angry. I didn’t want to be angry. I don’t think Cersei would be angry. I film every year and I have kids and it was just too much on top of that.”
According to Headey’s explanation, she believed that she wouldn’t be able to portray Cersei convincingly while also being n*ked.
Walk Of Shame Had Big Shooting Complications
In the end, the producers devised a resolution. While Headey would undertake the walk, a nude body double would accompany her, and CGI would later be employed to superimpose Headey’s head onto the double’s body.
“Rebecca is a great actress, and she was aware of what it was,” Headey said. “It was a long process trying to find somebody who got what it means to physically be there.”
During the filming process, the two actresses meticulously mapped out Cersei’s precise route through Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Headey had nothing but praise for the actress who played a crucial role in bringing the scene to life.
Game of Thrones is available for streaming on HBO Max.
