It’s no doubt that the on-screen romance between Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts is one of the most well-written romantic relationships in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The chemistry between the two actors is pretty evident, but it had to come to a close after 11 long years when Avengers: Endgame saw the end of Downey Jr’s time as Iron Man. However, it seems like he might just be inclined to come back after his ‘free pass’ joke.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show back in 2016, the Tropic Thunder star made quite the revelation regarding a ‘free pass’ that he got from his wife Susan Downey for Gwyneth Paltrow.
Downey Jr. also hinted that his wife had given him the thumbs to “makeout with her onscreen”–
“My free pass is – because her and Susan are such good friends – is Paltrow. I gotta get her back in these movies so I can make out with her onscreen again.”
During the time, the 57-year-old actor had last appeared as Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, which saw the absence of his love interest in the movie. Downey Jr. was furthered questioned whether his wife gets jealous of his onscreen romance with Paltrow, to which his response was-
“She could care less.”
That’s quite the arrangement that the three have, and there’s pretty much nothing to worry about if Susan Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow are friends!
How Gwyneth Paltrow Feels About Robert Downey Jr.
Susan Downey’s approval of a free pass for her husband and Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr.’s onscreen romance with Gwyneth Paltrow shows how comfortable and understanding these three are towards each other.
While Downey Jr. was very much interested in forging his onscreen relationship with Paltrow’s Pepper Potts, the latter revealed back in 2021 that she finds the Sherlock Holmes actor to be an “inspirational partner and friend.”
During a virtual interview with People in 10 last year, the 48-year-old actress spoke about her proudest achievements in her acting career, dropping projects like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Talented Mr. Ripley. But she also made sure to acknowledge the special chemistry she had with the Avengers star Robert Downey Jr. –
“My relationship with Robert Downey Jr., which was obviously forged through all the Iron Man and Avengers movies.”
She continued, saying-
“I feel like I was able to find an incredible, lifelong, inspirational partner and friend.”
It’s very clear that these two are pretty much the very best of friends, and can respect boundaries. And the best thing is they are both married to people who are just as amazing and understanding as they are!
