The year was 2015, Marvel had just released their second installment of Earth’s mightiest heroes coming together to save humanity once again in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The movie performed spectacularly in theatres doing a business close to $1.4B. Every MCU fan showered love and appreciation for the movie. Meanwhile, that raised the bar for upcoming movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as fans anticipated great films coming. Fantastic Four was next in line as the movie was released later that year, but the movie went south receiving negative reviews and ratings.
Fantastic Four (2015) was a complete box office, critical, and audience failure. Not only the fans and critics but even the stars of the movie, later on, had their fair share to say about the film turning out a disappointment as they tried to wash off the blame for the movie’s failure off their shoulders. Doctor Doom actor Toby Kebbell went on to state that he expected the movie to do well but was surprised with how it eventually turned out to be.
Toby Kebbell Refuses to Talk About His Fantastic Four Performance
As Fantastic Four 2015 Reboot was released, it tanked globally with reviewers marking it awful, owing to bad storytelling, a disjoint plot, and lackluster performances. The action in the movie was very limited and so was the lighting. Fans went on to even declare it the worst Fantastic Four movie ever made.
The actors of the movie when questioned about the movie turning into a disaster had displeasure answering the questions. Actor Toby Kebbell, who played the role of Doctor Doom in the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four, expressed his unwillingness to answer questions regarding his performance in the movie, stating that he’d rather not talk about it ever again. Later on, as the actor was assured that he wasn’t the reason behind the movie not working, Kebbell replied “You’re absolutely right; it was not my fault.” The actor went on to state that,
“I’d eat a whole croque en bouche of placenta puffs rather than be asked if I would go back and be terrible as Doctor Doom again. ‘Hey, you were terrible as Doctor Doom. Would you go back and do it again?’ Eh, no.”
Kebbell, although upset by the film’s performance, openly embraced the fans’ feedback as he went on to say that,
“My job is to come in and perform as best I can, and hopefully be directed in that path. I felt like I was. I felt like the film was going to go well. It didn’t turn out that the fans felt that way, so their reaction is honest, and I can only appreciate honesty.”
Toby Kebbell has been out and loud about the negative reviews of Fantastic Four since the film’s release in August 2015. The actor blames the film’s failure on bad leadership and hopes that Marvel Studios in the near future make a better version of the movie and especially his character, as he goes on to express his love for Doctor Doom, the character he portrayed on screen.
What Does the Future Hold for Fantastic Four Going Forward?
With the movie failing miserably at the box office, there is a cloud of credibility hovering over the franchise’s future movies. Fantastic Four was revealed as the opening movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Phase 6 during the summer, and Disney revealed lately that its release date was pushed back to February 2025.
With Wandavision director Matt Shakman taking on the responsibility of direction for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie in Phase 6 of MCU, fans can only hope for the franchise to revive itself and stand back up again.
