Making video game remakes has lately been a favorite of many filmmakers. Or should we say, ruining any popular video game by making a film based on it, is a pastime of many filmmakers. Not all of them realize that remakes of popular culture mostly end up in one way: disappointment. The same happened with the 2005 film Doom. Dwayne Johnson and Rosamund Pike, who starred together in the movie, now feel terribly regretful for ever agreeing to do the film.
Johnson and Pike have expressed their disappointment on different occasions, with both being regretful of not being able to meet the expectations of the fans of the video game. Additionally, the film just earned $58 million worldwide, despite a budget of $60 million.
Rosamund Pike And Dwayne Johnson Regret Starring In Doom
Doom is set on Mars, where the research facility called Union Aerospace Corporation is attacked by a test subject infested by alien DNA. Dwayne Johnson, a space marine, is sent on a mission to search and destroy this subject. Rosamund Pike, who plays a doctor, helps the space marines to retrieve valuable data. Based on the popular video game of the same name, the film, however, failed to deliver to the fans. Regarding the disappointment fans felt, Pike was once quoted as saying,
“I feel partly to blame in that respect because I think I failed just through ignorance and innocence to understand, to fully get a picture of what Doom meant to fans at that point. I wasn’t a gamer….. If I knew what I knew now, I would have dived right into all of that and got fully immersed in it like I do now……. I feel embarrassed, really. I feel embarrassed that I was sort of ignorant of what it meant and I didn’t know how to go about finding out because the internet wasn’t the place it is now for the fans to speak up.”
Even Johnson expressed similar views, elaborating that had they stayed true to the video game, they might have had a chance.
Rosamund Pike Did Not Like Starring Alongside Dwayne Johnson
When Rosamund Pike first received the offer, she was quite apprehensive about starring alongside Dwayne Johnson. The reason was that she felt he would be too serious to work with, as well as the fact that Johnson was just starting out in the industry.
I saw this guy and I thought he was going to take himself incredibly seriously. I thought he was going to be just the kind of man I wouldn’t like. Then he turned out to be someone who doesn’t take himself seriously at all. He’s funny and self-ironizing. He takes a piss at everyone and himself. I like that a lot.”
But from there started a 15-year-long and still going strong friendship between Pike and Johnson.
You can stream Doom on Apple TV.
