Jon Hamm revealed this actor wanted the lead in Mad Men
Actor John Slattery played the role of Roger Sterling in the popular show. He was one of the partners of the Sterling Cooper ad agency. Jon Hamm portrayed the character of Don Draper, a depressed ad executive, and self-centered guy. Slattery shared in an interview with The Independent that in 2007, he initially read for the role of Don, but eventually landed the role of Roger. He said,
“[Jon Hamm] claims I was in a bad mood the whole time we shot the first episode because of this, but I don’t think that’s true. Eventually, I saw him, and I was like, ‘Oh — they sure do have that guy.’”
Slattery further shared that people were literally mesmerized by the personality and character of Jon Hamm as Don Draper. He added,
“When Hamm walked into a room in that get-up, people would just go catatonic. Guest stars would sometimes walk up to him and their lines would go right out of their heads. They just wouldn’t know what to do. It happened on more than one occasion.”
He also added that the entry of Christina Hendricks would also make people sh*t themselves. He shared that it was amazing shooting these talented actors.
Elisabeth Moss shares a mentor and protégé relationship with Jon Hamm in Mad Men
Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss played copyeditor, Peggy Olson, in the show. She revealed in a conversation that she had a mentor-protégé relationship with co-star Jon Hamm.
She said,
“[It was] very older brother, little sister,”
Moss also admitted that she cried real tears in a pivotal scene in season 5 of the show. She shared,
“That’s actually real tears, which you know, hate to break it to you, but often we’re faking it,” Moss said. “He held onto my hand and didn’t let go and then kissed it. None of that was in the script and he did it on my close-up. Like, that right there is the real Jon.”
She added,
“The only costume I have from ‘Mad Men’ from all seven seasons, 90-something episodes, they asked me what costume I wanted to keep, and I said I wanted to keep that one because of that scene.”
The 1960s-based television show Mad Men garnered 16 Emmy wins and 5 Golden Globe awards across seven seasons of the show before it concluded in 2015.
