Kevin Spacey was gaining a lot of mileage with his TV show House of Cards when he was accused of sexual misconduct and fired from the show. In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations in 2017, many people came forward in Hollywood accusing some prominent figures, in what turned out to be the MeToo movement.
Actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making unwanted advances towards him when Rapp was just 14 years old and The Usual Suspects actor was 26. However, Spacey was found not guilty by the courts in the incident which happened in 1986.
Jennifer Aniston’s Anti-Cancel Culture Stance Revives Discussions On Kevin Spacey
In a recent discussion about Jennifer Aniston’s comments on cancel culture, Fox News contributor Douglas Murray claimed that Kevin Spacey’s career was destroyed by the prevailing cancel culture. The political commentator shared his disappointment with the MeToo movement, where prominent figures were put in the Harvey Weinstein category and fired from potential movies and series.
Earlier, Aniston, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, revealed that she was fed up with the cancel culture in Hollywood. The Friends actress condemned the situation where people were not given a second chance to rectify their mistakes. The Murder Mystery actress said:
“I’m so over cancel culture. I just don’t understand what it means.… Is there no redemption? I don’t know. I don’t put everybody in the Harvey Weinstein basket.”
However, the Derailed actress’s remarks received a mixed response. While some, like Murray, welcomed the opinion, others criticized her stance stating that she was speaking from a privileged position.
Douglas Murray Feels Kevin Spacey Should Get A Second Chance
Douglas Murray further said that not many people knew about Kevin Spacey’s acquittal and stated that the American Beauty actor was unjustly canceled, a mistake that Hollywood should acknowledge. Murray was happy that an actress with Jennifer Aniston’s star power took the much-needed stance against cancel culture. Murray shared:
“How many people even know that he was found not guilty in those cases? And that, in fact, the career of one of the best and most loved actors in America was ransacked for no reason! And as Jennifer Aniston says, where is the forgiveness? It should be possible for people to say ‘Look, we made a mistake with that. Come back, we need your talent.’”
Murray’s co-host on the show, Leslie Marshall, disagreed with his approach of categorizing workplace sexual assaults as either Weinstein-like or not. She was also critical of Aniston’s stance, stating that any form of sexual assault should be condemned. However, she agreed that if Kevin Spacey had been found not guilty, he should be given a second chance, just like Johnny Depp.
