Orlando Bloom on facing criticism for Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean
The actor received name and fame with his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. However, he also got backlash for his character in the film. In one of the scenes, he saw his lady love kissing the protagonist Jack Sparrow, but he still helped her save Sparrow from danger. Owing to this fans were unhappy about his role. However, after so many years, the actor said he is not bothered by the criticism because he did his best.
He admitted that he was made fun of a lot in the early phase of his career. He said he is happy with his work in movies like The Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Bloom shared with The Hollywood Reporter,
“I don’t look back. I don’t look back in anger. Nobody steps out of the door or onto a set — whoever you are, whether you’re an actor, director, or producer — nobody is trying to do bad work. I know when I put my head down at night, I’ve done my best with everything that I’ve ever done. I’ve always given it my all, and I think in a way, if anything, there was a lot of safe play in my career. I’m not really interested in that any more, so I can see how … I mean for Will [in Pirates of the Caribbean], for example, I was playing the straight guy to Johnny [Depp’s] remarkable Jack Sparrow, but it’s not easy to pull that straight guy off, do you know what I mean? And in a way, it was the emotional thread, that relationship between Elizabeth and Will, but I don’t look back with anything. I just look forward with excitement, to be honest now.”
Orlando Bloom shared that playing the straight man requires hard work and the comedy scene requires work on both ends.
