The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) expansion is filled with unforgettable characters and breathtaking storylines, and one such remarkable hero is Elizabeth Olsen. She brilliantly portrayed the character who single-handedly brought supervillain Thanos to his knees in the climactic feature, Avengers: Endgame.
But among the glory, a surprising behind-the-scenes revelation is disclosed. Director Joseph and Anthony Russo’s perception, that her character’s future was uncertain, was one unexpected challenge the 34-year-old experienced.
Elizabeth Olsen Sensed The Russo Brothers’ Confusion About Her Character
Elizabeth Olsen, renowned for her captivating portrayal of the enigmatic Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, faced a notable sense of uncertainty behind the scenes.
The directing duo, Joe and Anthony Russo, seemed confused about the course of her character. After director Joss Whedon’s involvement with Scarlet Witch’s debut in Age of Ultron, the Russo Brothers took charge of guiding the MCU’s later stages, known for their exceptional work with iconic heroes and epic storylines.
However, under the Russo’s brother’s direction, the actress found herself questioning their understanding of her character’s essence.
In an interview with the media, Olsen revealed the initial struggle the directing duo faced with Scarlet Witch, confessing,
“They were like, ‘She can do anything. If someone is fighting, she can end it quickly. I don’t know what to do.”
But, she remained optimistic that the directors would eventually adapt to the character. As filming progressed, the MCU star believed the Brothers gained a better grasp of her character, showcasing their growing comfort in writing her complex persona. She explained,
“Now they, I think, are a little more comfortable in how to write her. It’s like they figured her out during filming.”
Nevertheless, Olsen took ownership of her character, infusing her creative ideas into Scarlet Witch’s movements. Collaborating with the directorial duo, she sought to make the character’s actions more engaging and visually compelling.
Despite her remarkable contributions, she previously disclosed that certain scenes featuring her character were cut from Avengers: Endgame.
Elizabeth Olsen Explained Her Cut Avengers: Endgame Scene
The Oldboy performer previously revealed a mesmerizing aspect of her involvement in Avengers: Endgame. The artist shared that a scene featuring her character had been cut from the final version of the film.
In a video discussing on-set photos, Olsen explained that they were doing additional photography for the 2019 film, and it marked her first time working with Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrayed Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
She mentioned that they had filmed a scene where Doctor Strange threw a fireball but she wasn’t certain if it made it into the final cut. She explained,
“That’s um, I don’t even know if that was in the movie. But that’s Benedict and me the first time on-set together in the MCU when we were doing additional photography for ‘Endgame’. And they had just added a piece where [Doctor Strange] threw a fireball or something and then I threw a fireball or something. I don’t even know if it’s in it. But that was our first time working together.”
Interestingly, Olsen and Cumberbatch would later reunite in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but as enemies instead of allies.
Though fans can only imagine the impact the cut scene could have had, Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda Maximoff continues to captivate audiences, leaving a lasting impression within the extended Marvel universe.
