Following Dakota Johnson’s rise to fame with the Fifty Shades franchise, the actress has done tons of great movies. However, nothing compares to her appearance in the trippy, eerie, and disturbing Suspiria, from Luca Guadagnino. Apparently, the 2018 movie made Johnson feel deeply affected by it, more than it made the audiences uncomfortable.
Discussing her experience of playing Susie Bannion in Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria, Dakota Johnson mentioned being mentally affected by her role. Explaining how she had to seek the help of a mental professional after production, Johnson seemingly warned the audience about the disturbing element of the film.
Dakota Johnson Needed Therapy After Suspiria
Appearing in the gravely disturbing 2018 movie – Suspiria, by Luca Guadagnino, Dakota Johnson mentioned being mentally affected by it and seeking professional help after production. Reprising her role as Susie Bannion, alongside MCU actress Tilda Swinton, Johnson confessed to being extremely distressed after the production.
Previously during an interview with Elle, while speaking about her production company, Dakota Johnson disclosed how Suspiria – “no lie, f*cked me up so much that I had to go to therapy”. Further, during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Johnson openly explained how she had to seek help from a mental professional.
“First of all, I was not psychoanalyzed and I hope I never will be. I find sometimes when I work on a project and — I don’t have any shame in this — I’m a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people’s feelings.”
Discussing her process of working, the actress mentioned, “when you’re working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you”. Taking the example from her own experience with Suspiria, Johnson further mentioned, “talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.”
Dakota Johnson Discussed Her Filming Experience
After sharing her honest experience of how she went through therapy and spoke with a professional about her feelings surrounding Suspiria, Dakota Johnson clarified her work experience was more than phenomenal. Trying not to offend anyone, the actress quickly stated that her experience of making Suspiria, “was not traumatic”.
“It was the most fun and the most exhilarating and the most joyful that it could be,”
Clarifying any doubts before her words turn into headlines, Dakota Johnson stated that it’s her process of working that made her seek help, and not the movie. “It’s mischievous and play[ful] and I love it more than anything. It wasn’t that this film sent me to a ward, I just have a lot of feelings” Johnson declared.
Appearing in Luca Guadagnino‘s Suspiria, a remake of Dario Argento’s cult classic from 1977, Dakota Johnson claimed to have a great time alongside her co-stars Tilda Swinton, Chloe Moretz, and Jessica Harper. The 2018 horror thriller further made its way into theatres to earn $20M worldwide, and helm a 65% RT rating.
