“I don’t fear killing characters”: The Last of Us Showrunner Addresses Pedro Pascal’s Joel Death in Season 2 After Emotional First Season Finale

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey managed to make history with The Last of Us. Not only did it become HBO Max’s most-watched series, but as a game adaptation, it managed to reach every fan as well as first-time watcher’s heart. The range of emotion provided for the audience was both heartbreaking and awe-worthy at the same time. The focus on Joel and Ellie’s relationship was just the right amount which was neither forced nor in a manner of coincidence.

When it comes to The Last of Us, no amount of praise would be enough. It turned out to be one of those rare series that need not prove to anyone just how well-made it is. The events of the first game were beautifully added while contributing aspects that would only be achievable with creative control that the game would limit them with. So when the first season ended with a bang, the second storyline has the crowd in a raucous of concern.

Pedro Pascal’s Joel Is In Danger After The First Season’s Ending

Sometimes game adaptations go well, and sometimes they don’t. They can stick to the source like The Last of Us or Arcane, or they may drift far away like The Witcher and Assassin’s Creed: Annihilation. The range is unmistakably spread out. A lot of shows, movies, and books often kill their main characters. Whether it is Supernatural, Avengers: Endgame, or even the Divergent series. Those fans who haven’t played the second game yet might also know by now that the sequel is not kind to Joel.

The first season has proved that the series is not afraid to follow its source material. The season finale had the same events that the climactic ending of the first game had. Joel ended up killing Jerry Anderson in order to save Ellie. He chose her over saving the entire world. However, with that course already set out to play, the second season does not look kindly to Pedro Pascal‘s Joel.

Craig Mazin Does Not Mind Killing Joel In The Second Season

To her avenge her father’s death, Abby Anderson kills Joel and the premise of the second game follows Ellie quite literally hunting Abby. What the fans had been hoping was that the showrunners would find a way around that and avoid killing Pedro Pascal’s character.

“This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters, But the important thing to note is that neither Neil nor I feel constrained by the source material.”

That might not be the case though. Craig Mazin himself clarified that both he and Neil Druckmann are not hesitant when it comes to killing the protagonists. If death is necessary to keep the series running, then they will implement it without hesitation. It can be very easily understood that if neither of them feels that Pascal’s absence would affect the flow of the series then they surely have a plan in mind that would grip the fans just as the game did.

The first season of The Last of Us is now streaming on HBO Max.
