Dave Bautista is no stranger to big franchises and blockbuster films. Since he departed from WWE, he has focused on trying to make a successful career in Hollywood. He has been in some of the biggest movies and franchises including playing Drax in the MCU, Mr. Hinx in Spectre, Sapper Morton in Blade Runner 2049, and Glossu Rabban in Dune to name a few. He has also branched out and played against type characters in films like Knock At The Cabin and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Ever since his friend and long-time collaborator James Gunn became the head of DC at Warner Bros, fans have been speculating whether he would bring in people from Guardians of the Galaxy to play prominent roles in the new DCU. A past comment made by Bautista about his dream DC role comes to the minds of people adding to their belief that Gunn might involve him in his new venture at DC.
Dave Bautista Desperately Wanted to Play Bane in a DC Project
Dave Bautista has played the role of Drax in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and now Gunn has taken over the reins over the overall creative vision of DC. Many people believed that he would bring in his friends from his films in the MCU to take part in his new venture. Bautista has previously revealed his dream DC role that he wants to play and has even tried to have a meeting with the heads at DC at the time to make it happen. He said, (via Collider)
“Oh, it would be Bane all day long. I’ve made no secret about this. I want to play Bane so bad I went to Warner Bros., had an appointment with them, had an appointment with DC, walked in the door, and said, ‘I want to play Bane.’ I’m not kidding. They were a little like ‘Woah, we’re not even casting Bane.’ I was like ‘I don’t care, I’m playing him.'”
With Gunn now at the helm of the entire DC, one hopes that Gunn brings his friend Bautista to be a part of his DC world-building. But according to a recent comment by Bautista, it seems unlikely.
James Gunn’s Vision of His DCU Does Not Fit Dave Bautista
James Gunn announced his new vision for the DCU with a slate of projects in various stages of development. Bautista revealed in a recent interview that he realized Gunn’s overall direction of his DCU is a unique approach and he does not fit into that world and the characters that he is bringing. He told Insider,
“I have had conversations with James about that but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, He’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that. I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors. You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that. And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore”
Although it is sad news for people who were hoping to see Bautista portray the iconic DC villain, his comments are understandable. It reflects his desire to not force himself to do something that he cannot convincingly portray anymore due to his age. He is not worried about losing the part as he is as busy as ever with many exciting projects lined up. He has Dune: Part 2 releasing next year. He will also star in the action comedy films My Spy: The Eternal City and The Killer’s Game.
