Jon Hamm has worked on many projects in Hollywood but his portrayal of Don Draper in the TV series Mad Men holds a special corner in fans’ hearts. Given that many other actors gained prominence on this project, it would be hard to imagine anyone getting rejected during the casting process but it’s not impossible.
Carla Gugino Was Unable to Bag a Role in Jon Hamm’s Mad Men
She revealed that her strong acting career eventually led to her dismissal from even getting considered for any spot in the series.
She recalled meeting with the show creator, Matthew Weiner as she stated,
“We were espousing our mutual fandom,” Gugino stated. “I said, ‘I am perfect for Mad Men’. And he said, ‘You’re too famous’.”
She continued, “So I couldn’t win.”
From her statement, it seemed like the creator was looking for some unknown faces at the time who would be recognized for their characters specifically. It eventually happened since show stars including Jon Hamm are widely known for his portrayal in the series.
Carla Gugino’s Projects That Made Her ‘Too Famous’
Given that the creator turned her down due to being ‘too famous‘ to star in the series, it is not an exaggeration since she has been a part of some of the amazing projects at that time. She gained wider recognition with her Ingrid Cortez role in the Spy Kids trilogy.
She caught the eyes of many with her Rebecca Hutman role, the love interest of Ben Stiller’s character in 2006’s film, Night at the Museum. Her role in Zack Snyder‘s 2009 action movie Watchmen earned her critical acclaim with the actress and also gained further fame on the small screen by working on projects like The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House, and Threshold.
The actress has highly impressed Snyder who once mentioned that he would have loved to see her portraying Catwoman in the DCEU. Portraying such a significant role in the franchise would definitely give her career a push however the wish to work in the Mad Men franchise would remain unfulfilled. The show went on to become super-popular which concluded in 2015 with seven seasons.
Mad Men is available on AMC+.
