There was something magical about The Office. The sitcom remains a fan favorite to this day for a host of reasons. Be it the quirky characters, or the dynamics between the colleagues; everything was spot on. One of the most loved elements of the show was the relationship Jim and Pam shared. The office sweethearts’ relationship is considered a relationship goal to this day. And there was the odd voice that believed that these feelings were not just limited to the fictional world.
The perfect ‘Jim and Pam’
Jim and Pam were the ‘it couple’. The chemistry between the two was ostensible even when Pam was engaged to Roy. This chemistry was felt by the actors themselves. Jenna Fischer said,
“[John Krasinski] wasn’t just the best Jim — he was Jim. I remember the day we met. … As he passed by, he introduced himself, and we shook hands. It was if lightning struck through the center of the room.”
As Fischer would later find out, the Jack Ryan star also felt the same way. The A Little Help star wrote in her book, The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide,
“John and I were walking out of an audition scene, and he suddenly turned to me and whispered, ‘You’re my favorite Pam. I hope you get this job.’”
The License to Wed star’s wish would come to pass. They both would be cast as the lead pair.
The perfect first kiss
Ever since the first season aired, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer’s chemistry was there for everyone to see. The fact that Pam was engaged to Roy did not stop fans from speculating about their prospects.
After two seasons worth of will-they-won’t-they tension, they would finally have their moment – the much-awaited first kiss. The entire crew knew its importance. And just like innumerable scenes, the helmers of the show got this one right as well. Director Ken Kwapis’s adjustments helped. But what was instrumental behind its success was the chemistry between the personnel involved.
John Krasinski clarifies Jenna Fischer’s comments
As Jenna Fischer would later reveal, the scene, which was her first on-screen kiss, was a difficult one. The nerves were there. But the connection between them made it somewhat easier. The Splitting Up Together star even remarked that it was as if the two were genuinely in love. Little did she know, how this statement would be turned against her.
A Quiet Place star came to her aid yet again, clarifying that her statement had been spun out of context. He said,
“I think that was wildly misquoted or taken out of context. As far as how she was quoted about saying we were ‘genuinely in love,’ I think that was taken wildly out of context and I feel bad for her.”
Fans’ hopes of seeing their favorite on-screen couple in real life were dashed by these comments. And as we now know, both Fischer and Krasinski are happily married and thriving.
