Actress Kat Dennings is well-known for playing Darcy Lewis, Jane Foster’s (Natalie Portman) intern and friend, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision (2021). Initially, there were no plans for her character in the franchise, then how did her character become so important?
Dennings has often credited her friendship with her Thor co-star, Natalie Portman, for expanding her character’s involvement in the franchise. It was their off-screen bond that inspired the filmmakers to increase Dennings’ involvement in the first Thor film. Today, Darcy Lewis is an important character in the franchise, especially after her appearance in 2021’s WandaVision.
Kat Dennings got more screentime because of Natalie Portman
Hollywood stars Kat Dennings and Natalie Portman were friends for many years when they both got the opportunity to star in 2011’s Thor. Initially, Dennings only had 2 scenes in the movie but then the writers and Marvel executives on the sets had another plan. During her appearance on the Keep It! podcast in 2021, Dennings recalled,
“My part, Darcy, was originally 2 scenes. She was literally just an intern, just there to kind of bounce off of other people. I was already like, it was the best day of my life… I could not believe these people hired me. Like I duped them somehow into hiring me. I walked in the room, very shy and Natalie came in and sat on my lap, ’cause we’re friends. And that’s how my friends and I are… I think our friendship started to affect them with its purity and love,” adding, “Slowly Darcy became a little more involved and I was like, ‘Why are they adding me to scenes?’ And that’s kind of what happened, friendship magic is the reason I’m here today.”
The writers and Marvel executives added a lot of scenes involving Dennings, kicking off her MCU journey. Apart from the MCU, Dennings is well-known for her work in Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008), Defendor (2009), and The House Bunny (2008).
Darcy Lewis is now an important character
Today, Darcy Lewis is an important character in the MCU. After 2011’s Thor, Dennings reprised the role in Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and WandaVision (2021).
Dr. Darcy Lewis, who started out as an intern, acquired a doctorate in astrophysics and was brought in by S.W.O.R.D. when Monica Rambeau went missing in the town of Westview, NJ. She was the one who discovered that the town was actually trapped in a simulation, concluding that Wanda Maximoff was the culprit. Just like Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster, we got to see Dennings’ character getting more involved in the franchise.
