Levi Ackerman has always intrigued fans. He is the Survey Corps squad leader, the most powerful soldier, and a fantastically written character. In a 2014 Interview with Mangabrog, Creator Isayama revealed the character that inspired him to create Levi Ackerman. He said:
“Levi is a character I accidentally created while idly doodling, and I, of course, knew I had something. Then I saw Watchmen, and the character Rorschach really stuck with me and I decided I wanted to try doing a similar character, so I combined him with that doodle.”. The mangaka went on to add that he knew the character would be popular amongst yaoi fangirls and responded with, “I was going for something similar to Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho, and the moment I finished his design I knew I had something good.”
The characters also have a similar background. In “Attack on Titan,” Levi grows up in the slums of a subterranean city, while Watchman character Rorschach is abused in a working-class New York City neighborhood.
