In a recent interview, it was revealed that David Chase and Michael Imperioli, both associated with the extraordinary HBO hit series, The Sopranos, are working together on a new script. Although the details of it are yet to be revealed, fan theories abound as to the implications of what a new script could mean. It has been a year since the release of the prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, and given its obvious success, it is not surprising for the creator to weave a new story into the mix so soon.
Michael Imperioli Teases David Chase’s New Movie Script
While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli talked about what’s next for the world of the New Jersey mafia. Even though it has been 15 years since the critically acclaimed HBO series aired its final episode, the world-building and story-telling of David Chase’s creation continue to live on among the fans.
The most recent news on that front comes from one of the most active and well-recognized faces in the world of The Sopranos, i.e. Michael Imperioli who played Christopher Moltisanti on the show. In response to whether he still remains in contact with David Chase, Imperioli claimed that Chase has, in fact, been hard at work on a new script that involves him along with another The Sopranos veteran, Steve Schirripa, who played Bobby Bacala.
“Yeah, we’re writing a movie together right now for me and Steve Schirripa. It’s a mystery project… I can’t talk about it beyond that.”
Although no title has yet been announced or even an indication of what capacity Schirripa and Imperioli are involved in with the new project, it is hard to believe that a new The Sopranos spin-off involving Moltisanti and Bacala of all people could be in the works.
What Can a New Spin-off Project Mean For The Sopranos?
Hollywood is no stranger to the practice of churning out factory-line projects in the tail-end of a blockbuster success. The Sopranos is no different. The HBO show which to date stands as one of the most beloved and celebrated television series of all time has only recently spawned a prequel drama starring James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark which traces the early formative years of the indomitable New Jersey mob boss.

It is only understandable in the aftermath of the project’s crushing success that Chase is seeking to expand the Soprano universe. If Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa are indeed playing an active part in the new movie/series, it would have to be a prequel just like the 2021 film, considering both their characters were dead by the time the original show ended. Moreover, considering their current age, the details of how Chase intends to make the new project work seem complicated, to say the least.
For now, the fans can enjoy the fact that a Soprano project is coming soon and the success of the prequel film already puts the new idea with a good chance of being green-lit for production.
The Many Saints of Newark and The Sopranos are available for streaming on HBO Max.
