Actors have had their reasons for not starring in movies and projects. They would often regret their decisions much like Jonathan Groff did with Margot Robbie’s Barbie. Groff is known for several iconic roles and movies but sadly, Barbie is not one of them.
In an interview, the casting director of the 2023 movie talked about how many actors wanted to be Ken Doll in the movie. Although Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Kingsley Ben-Adir were selected for the role, several people did miss the opportunity to star alongside Margot Robbie.
Many Actors Regret Turning Down Margot Robbie’s Barbie
Margot Robbie shined in the role of Barbie in the 2023 movie with the film receiving rave reviews and critical acclaim from around the world. With the movie climbing higher and higher in terms of global box office, the casting director of Barbie talked about the process of casting actors for the role of Ken Doll.
With Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Ken Dolls, the casting director revealed that there were several other people who had to leave the movie. With the reason that the cast and crew of Barbie had to stay for three months in London, several actors who were considered for the role of Ken Doll had to leave the project. Jonathan Groff, known for his iconic portrayal of Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, was also one of them.
In an interview, one of the casting directors of the film, Allison Jones, talked about the challenges the actors faced while trying to commit to the role of Ken Doll and the regret that they felt later for opting out of the project.
“They were, I’m not kidding, really bummed they couldn’t do it. Dear, dear Jonathan Groff was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I can’t do Allan.”
For reference, Allan was the buddy of Ryan Gosling’s Ken who was portrayed by Michael Cera in the movie. Margot Robbie also talked about how they got Ryan Gosling to board the movie by bothering him constantly.
How Margot Robbie Convinced Ryan Gosling To Join Barbie
Before Ryan Gosling even agreed to star in the movie, Margot Robbie had already convinced herself that she would star alongside The Notebook actor. In an interview, the Suicide Squad actress revealed that she wrote the character in the script as “Ken Ryan Gosling”.
“We just kept bothering you,” director Greta Gerwig said. “Margot was like, ‘Is it weird if I go to his house?’ I was like, ‘Don’t go to his house. We’re just gonna stay put.’ Send a follow-up text.”
With a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDB and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is expected to reach $500 million at the box office. The film is currently screening in theaters across the world.
