Kate Winslet, who dominated the late 1990s with Titanic, has appeared in some of the most critically acclaimed films. Her performances have enthralled audiences and critics alike in films like Insurgent and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Thus, the actress, who has been in the film business for 32 years and has collaborated with some of the best directors and stars, is without a doubt one of the best talents of Hollywood.
She frequently steps outside of her comfort zone, pushing herself to deliver a flawless performance and shatter stereotypes. However, there were two films on which she worked in 2017 that left the actress with nightmares.
She starred in two of the most challenging films of her career— Wonder Wheel by Woody Allen and The Mountain Between Us by Hany Abu-Assad.
The actress even once admitted that it was more difficult to work on The Mountain Between Us than it was to prepare for her career-launching role in Titanic.
Kate Winslet Got ‘Panic Dreams’ While Filming The Mountain Between Us
In The Mountain Between Us, Idris Elba and Kate Winslet played a doctor and a journalist, respectively, who were stranded on an icy, desolate mountain range after their plane crashed. The actress, 47, had to perform physically demanding scenes in harsh weather for her role in The Mountain Between Us.
However, Winslet, who has had three pregnancies, likely underestimated the difficulties of filming the 2017 movie as the mother of three once claimed;
“I would have panic dreams about my children being trapped under ice.”
She also experienced sleep deprivation while filming Woody Allen’s 2017 period drama Wonder Wheel, in which Winslet was stuck in an unfulfilling marriage in a clown house. Then entered the mob, with Justin Timberlake playing the part of the charming lifeguard. The actress recalled:
“It’s a character who really, truly not just unravels, but becomes so utterly undone by what happens to her during the course of the story.”
She immediately entered the Hany Abu-Assad-directed film The Mountain Between Us, which was filmed in the mountains of Western Canada, after completing Wonder Wheel:
“We would fly up in helicopters to work every day. We were very, very high up [about 10,000 feet] and very, very cold.”
Moreover, even after having three children, Winslet discovered that her physical and mental health were better than ever:
“There’s a certain sense of satisfaction after having had three children and being 41 years old, and actually feeling probably fitter and stronger than ever. It was like, I can put some of that physical strength to good use.”
Titanic Was Not As Challenging As The Mountain Between Us
Nothing compares to the difficult shooting environments Kate Winslet experienced for Hany Abu-Assad’s survival drama, The Mountain Between Us. The 47-year-old Oscar-winning actress claimed she was up for the challenge despite the demanding filming schedule. She told PEOPLE:
“I did Titanic, dude! Falls through ice – no problem! Plane crash, boat sinks – no biggie!”
Idris Elba and Winslet played a pair of strangers who wind up stranded on a mountaintop after a plane crash in the movie. When they came to the realization that nobody was coming to save them, they set out on a dangerous quest to find civilization.
Also, Winslet was very proud of herself for making it through The Mountain Between Us. The cast and crew had to be helicoptered onto the set in the bitter cold to film in the remote Canadian Rockies:
“We weren’t ready for how hard those environments were to actually work in. I’ve heard Leo say similar things about The Revenant. We had quite a lot of crew who were from that film, and they did go so far as to say that ‘this is tougher,’ which we were quite proud of.”
Winslet, who has three children of her own, would ensure everyone else’s safety and security on the mountain much like a mother would:
“I would make chicken soup; I’d take one for me and one for Idris up the mountain.”
In The Mountain Between Us, Winslet performed all of her own stunts, calling it the physically taxing experience of her career. Her last film of 2017 was the Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel, also starring Justin Timberlake, and Jim Belushi, among others.
The Mountain Between Us is available to rent on Apple TV while Wonder Wheel is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
