This time, their paths crossed in the 1989 adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the movie, Phoenix portrayed a teenage version of Ford’s iconic character, Indiana Jones.
In an early sequence of the film, the young Indy (River Phoenix) stumbles upon a group of grave robbers who have stolen a precious and historically significant gold crucifix. Displaying his resourcefulness and wit, Indy manages to seize the cross from the thieves. However, a wild pursuit ensues, ultimately leading Indy to return the cross to its rightful place. Director Steven Spielberg was drawn to casting River Phoenix in a significant role for a high-budget film due to the actor’s previous performance in another movie.
