“I approve, but only if Dave Bautista is…”: After Halo, Microsoft Making Live Action Movie on Another $1B Video Game Franchise With Guardians of the Galaxy Star?

After Halo, Microsoft Making Live Action Movie on Another $1B Video Game Franchise With Guardians of the Galaxy Star?

We live in an age of video game adaptations, and it seems that Gears of War, Microsoft’s third-person shooter series, is next in line. Video game adaptations have gained traction in recent years, with HBO’s The Last of Us being a hit with both old fans of the game and new TV fans as well. Another example is the animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which proved to be both critically and commercially successful.

It’s no surprise that Gears of War has been chosen by Microsoft after they invested in another popular franchise of theirs – namely, Halo. As of now, we know next to nothing about the project, other than the fact that streaming giant Netflix will be adapting the movie and that they will also be making an animated series. What that means is that both directorial and acting talent are still yet to be filled, and some high-profile names have shown interest.

Which director showed interest in making a Gears of War movie?

Zack Snyder, the famed director of films such as Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Watchmen as well as the upcoming Rebel Moon, recently showed interest during an interview at Gamescom 2023. What’s notable here is that Snyder already has a major pre–existing deal with Netflix. Snyder gave fans a hint at Gamescom by saying the following:

“We’ve talked about a bunch of… Gears has always come up in our sort of circle”.

That’s just a clue of what could be in the works for the Gears of War movie and potentially the animated show too. As expected, it was more than enough to start trending online soon enough with many fans sharing their thoughts on the possibility of Snyder directing Gears of War. But the biggest response came from the game’s creator, Cliff Bleszinski, who approved of Snyder directing the movie, albeit with one condition: that actor Dave Bautista plays protagonist Marcus Fenix.

What does Dave Bautista have to say about starring in a Gears of War movie?

Known for his exploits in WWE before making a solid career in acting, Dave Bautista has expressed a strong desire to star in a Gears of War adaptation. And it’s not just recently too; he’s been campaigning for it for years now. When talk turned to whether Netflix would reach out to him, Bautista had the following to say:

“I really hope they will. It’s a part that I’ve sought after for years and I feel like I could bring a lot of heart to Marcus Fenix. I really would. I think I would do that part justice. I feel confident in it, so hopefully it’ll come my way and we’ll be having this conversation differently sometime”.

It’s also worth pointing out that Zack Snyder and Dave Bautista have worked together before, and that too for a Netflix movie. This was for the Army of the Dead in 2021.

Gears of War developer The Coalition has also honored Dave Bautista’s love for their games by adding a skin based on him in their latest game, Gears 5, via some DLC.
