Hollywood director Zack Snyder has recently been in conversation for the upcoming project Rebel Moon. The highly anticipated film is set to premiere this December on the streaming giant and is also deemed to be Netflix’s Star Wars. Snyder has also opened up about how he first pitched it to Lucasfilms as an R-rated Star Wars project. However, it did not make it to the popular sci-fi franchise.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant, the Army of the Dead director explained how his upcoming film would stand out in comparison to Star Wars and even went on to take a dig at the popular sci-fi franchise.
Zack Snyder’s Claims He Dodged Star Wars’ One Mistake
Starring Hollywood stars like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, the 1977 film Star Wars: A New Hope intimated the popular film series. While it has become massively popular throughout the last decades, there has been one critical remark among fans about the movie series, following the desert planet of Tatooine.
And Zack Snyder, whose upcoming movie has been heavily inspired by Star Wars, also seemed to take a hit at the popular franchise in a recent interview. During his interview with Screen Rant, the filmmaker explained how he does not comprehend Star Wars’ world-building.
“I always laugh that in Star Wars, it just so happens that the native costumes of this weird Tatooine, this weird planet in the middle of nowhere, happen to be the fashion of the entire universe.”
The director further explained that he has always been intrigued by different planets, different people, their sense of fashion, and other things in a story that make it relatable. “I like the idea of everything is terrestrially inspired because I feel like it makes it really relatable,” he further explained.
Rebel Moon Producer is Glad It’s Not a Star Wars Film
Zack Snyder’s wife, Deborah Snyder, who is acting as a producer of his upcoming film Rebel Moon, has stated that she is glad Lucasfilm rejected the offer to adapt it under the Star Wars universe. She claimed that she had always believed that the story had the potential to be successful on its own and wanted Snyder to develop it as a standalone movie.
“I never wanted it to be [a Star Wars movie] because your hands are tied to the IP,” she said before adding, “I was happy it fell apart.” The director also revealed that after Lucasfilm rejected his pitch for an R-rated movie, she told him that he would have been very “sad” if the story was developed as a Star Wars movie. “Debbie said, ‘Thank God, you would’ve been so sad,'” Snyder recalled in an interview.
Rebel Moon will premiere on December 22, 2023, on Netflix.
