No one is safe when Ricky Gervais is on the mic and throughout his stint of hosting five Golden Globes, the British comedian hasn’t st3pped away from obliterating A-listers with his jokes. This includes the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, and other prominent Hollywood icons.
Back in 2015, The Hunger Games star made headlines after speaking out against Gender Pay while reflecting on being paid less than her male costars in American Hustle. Although she garnered overwhelming support for speaking out against the matter, the After Life star didn’t pull any punches during his 2016 monologue, where he addressed Lawrence’s comments.
Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t safe from Ricky Gervais’ brutal honesty
Like all of his Golden Globe monologues, in 2016, Ricky Gervais didn’t back away from being brutally honest and gave the A-listers a reality check in his own fun fashion. This involved the British comedian poking fun at The Hunger Games star about her complaints against the gender pay gap in Hollywood. Following his brutally honest rant about the matter, Gervais didn’t fail to draw a reaction from the crowd, leaving Lawrence laughing in embarrassment. He said,
“Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women in Hollywood and she received overwhelming support from people everywhere. There were marches on the street with nurses and factory workers saying, ‘how the hell can a 25-year-old live on 52 million?’ There were plumbers around the world going, ‘poor girl, wrecking hell!'”
But Gervais didn’t mean to discredit Lawrence for speaking out against the inequality in wages between female and male performers, as he claimed, “Women should be paid the same as men for doing the same job”. However, Gervais followed on with another joke, saying he was paid the same “as Tina and Amy did last year” for hosting Golden Globes, although it isn’t his fault the two had to share the money, leaving the crowd giggling.
Jennifer Lawrence still remains vocal about the gender pay gap issue
But this wasn’t the only instance when Jennifer Lawrence opened up about the gender pay gap issue. Back in 2021, following her return to acting after a brief hiatus, she once again touched on the topic. Considering she was paid $5M less than Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up, even though she claimed actors were often overpaid for their job, the discrepancy between their wages still stings. She explained,
“It doesn’t matter how much I do. I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my v*gina?”
Even years after Lawrence first spoke out against it, the gender pay gap remains an issue that still needs solving, and actors, including Mark Wahlberg, have too showcased their support regarding the matter.
