“How do you say no to that?”: Oscar Winning Actress Joined MCU For Robert Downey Jr Without Any Significant Knowledge About Marvel Superheroes

Oscar Winning Actress Joined MCU For Robert Downey Jr Without Any Significant Knowledge About Marvel Superheroes

Gwyneth Paltrow, or as Marvel Fans love to call her, Pepper Potts, seems to have a shaky memory when it comes to her involvement in the MCU franchise. Having portrayed the role of Iron Man Tony Stark’s love interest since 2008, Paltrow plays an integral part in the super-hero universe. However, the Oscar-winning actress wasn’t exactly a comic buff before she took up the role. In fact, it looks like Paltrow accepted the role only for Robert Downey Jr.

Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she joined Iron Man for Robert Downey Jr

During one of her interviews, Gwyneth Paltrow admitted that she was never a comic book fan growing up. However, she shared that her brother was a huge superhero fan, and thus she understood what it was to be a passionate follower.

She further revealed that before the shooting began, Marvel sent her some Iron Man comics to familiarize her with who exactly Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are. Moreover, she shared that it was through these old binders and photo-copied comic books that helped her understand how Potts’ character including her clothes and hairstyles changed over the years and how she dealt with Stark.

But if Paltrow wasn’t an Iron Man fan, then what motivated her to take up the role in the franchise? Robert Downey Jr. While revealing her true motivations behind her decision, Paltrow continued,

“You never know what will work or not work, but there were a few things. Firstly, I always wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. Also, if someone calls you and says ‘Jon Favreau is directing a movie with Robert Downey Jr, Terence Howard, and Jeff Bridges’ I mean, how do you say no to that? It’s such an amazing group of people.”

And clearly, Paltrow’s lack of MCU knowledge sometimes does reflect in some of her media interactions. Like the time when she completely forgot about her role in a Spider-Man movie.

Gwyneth Paltrow admitted to forgetting MCU Roles and movies

In one of her interviews on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Paltrow admitted that she hasn’t watched many Marvel movies and often forgets about the projects she has been a part of. Surprisingly, the actress forgot about her involvement in Spider-Man: Homecoming, ironically her top-billing MCU project.

Moreover, during her interaction with Elle, Paltrow explained why she hasn’t been able to catch up on all MCU films, even skipping the ones she starred in.

“It is confusing because there are so many Marvel movies, and to be honest, I haven’t seen very many of them. It’s really stupid and I’m sorry, but I’m a 47-year-old mother.”

Oddly, Paltrow’s forgetfulness extends beyond her movie roles. In a funny instance, the Shakespeare in Love actress was unaware of who the current Spider-Man was – even after shooting an entire movie with him. In her Instagram post, celebrating Robert Downey Jr, she referred to Tom Holland as “that other guy in the photo.” Apart from this, her lapses in memory have even led to some humorous interactions with her co-actors like Sebastian Stan and Samuel L Jackson.
