‘How about something original?’: Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler’s New X-Files Series To Have Diverse Cast, Fans Divided

'How about something original?': Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler's New X-Files Series To Have Diverse Cast, Fans Divided

X-Files is a loved TV show which went on for a long long time until it came to an end in 2018. The followed its pair of protagonists, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who complement each other very well, one is a skeptic and the other is a believer. These two fit like yin-yang and their chemistry holds the plot together and gets the audience emotionally invested in the show.

After X-Files came to an end, a spin-off was announced in 2020, it was said to be an animated show. The explanation given in 2020 was, “The potential series will center an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous, or downright dopey for Mulder and Scully to bother with. They’re essentially the X-Files’ B-team.” There is no official release date announced as of now.

No announcements or follow-ups were given about the animated show instead Chris Carter gave insight into a new project which will be developed by the director of Black Panther and Creed. Carter spoke to On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko

“I just spoke to a young man… Ryan Coogler… is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

There are a few things to consider here before we jump into right or wrong. The first is what if the animated project announced in 2020 is what Carter is talking about? It was not clear yet if it can be ruled out from the realm of possibilities. The second is how long will the development process take. That is up to the producer and director associated with the project, this too could disappear like the animated show Carter talked about.

Fans react to the “woke” X-Files announcement

X-Files

Many have readily pointed out the lack of originality and laziness. Some are fearful that this is just a ploy to make more money from an already established show, re-packaging it as fresh or woke, or inclusive and serving it up to the saturated audience pool. Is Hollywood running out of ideas, it is hard to believe that it isn’t. The only good content available is mostly refurbished and reinvented from an already successful formula.

While some fans are in support of the idea:

Black Representation or Diversity in media is crucial but using it as a label or a means to attract the woke generation would be crass. It is not expected of Coogler who is a master of his craft and has delivered wonderful pieces of cinema consistently. So maybe we get our favorite formula with proper black representation that adds value to the community instead of just lip service, however, in able hands like Coogler’s, we might be in for a treat.
