Netflix’s Arcane: League of Legends now scores a spot beside greats like Rick and Morty and The Simpsons to win the Best Animated Program at this year’s Emmy. Adapted from the League of Legends by Riot Games, the animated series debuted on the streaming platform on 6 November 2021. The narrative that follows the story of two sisters tragically fated to be pitted against each other has now surprised the world by overtaking Marvel’s What If…? to secure the coveted winning spot.

Arcane: League of Legends aside from great world-building and incredibly cinematic storytelling also hosts a stellar cast comprised of Hailee Steinfield, Ella Purnell, Katie Leung, Jason Spisak, Harry Lloyd, and Kevin Alejandro. The series currently holds an incredible 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Arcane Incinerates What If…? at the 2022 Emmy Awards
Reserved only for top-tier performance in terms of artistic and technical merit, the Creative Arts Emmys is one of the most lauded and venerated award ceremonies that the industry turns its attention to every year. And 2022 has just been full of surprises. The nominations for Best Animated Program included two pioneering shows in the said field that were not only worthy of the award but also backed by the love and fandom of millions of viewers.

However, it was Arcane: League of Legends, not Marvel’s ground-breaking series What If…?, that has gone on to finally win the Best Animated Program. This also marks the first time a streaming service has picked up an Emmy. What If…?, in all fairness, was not entirely left behind as the award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance was awarded posthumously to Chadwick Boseman for his performance as T’Challa/Star-Lord in the show’s second episode titled, What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?
Arcane and What If…? Make History at the Emmys
What’s a Hollywood award ceremony without a tinge of controversy? The 2022 Emmys were also shrouded in divisive criticism after awarding the best voice-over performance award to Chadwick Boseman. Fans are now claiming that the late actor’s passing is being treated as a deciding factor in the award’s declaration, which of course goes on to say that the Emmys were biased in their judgment. The episode featuring Benedict Cumberbatch from the same show is being held as an example of who the award should have gone to instead.
Arcane: League of Legends, animated by Fortiche Productions, hasn’t had any contenders, however. The series stands as a clear winner and co-creator Christian Linke, who picked up the Emmy, responded, “It’s a big deal for us as we come from video games. It’s been amazing to see the world embrace our characters and our stories.” The series has been renewed for a second season.
