While directing the 2013 movie, David O. Russell had a scene involving Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper. During that scene, Adams has to hit Cooper while the latter yells at her. In an interview with GQ, the Man of Steel actress talked about how much pressure David O. Russell kept on her off-screen by constantly screaming instructions on what to do.

“Even I was surprised on American Hustle, because on [his previous film] Silver Linings Playbook he had developed this wild, crazy way of working with Bradley [Cooper] and Jennifer [Lawrence]… and it was mania. I was like: wow.”

She continued,

“I did a scene with Bradley where I have to hit him and he’s yelling at me, ‘Hit him! Hit him! Hit him! Hit him! HARDER! HARDER! HARDER! Really give it to him this time,”

The actress further revealed that there have been several instances where the director has made her cry on-set. Comparing her toughness to her co-star Jennifer Lawrence’s, Adams revealed that she’s not so tough.

With how much Adams talked about working in American Hustle, the interviewer asked her if David O. Russell had ever made her cry. Adams looked up and replied affirmatively that Russell’s tactics had indeed made her cry several times. Speaking with GQ, the actress also compared herself to Jennifer Lawrence.

“He did. He was hard on me, that’s for sure. It was a lot. I was really just devastated on set. Jennifer [Lawrence] doesn’t take any of it on. She’s Teflon. And I am not Teflon. But I also don’t like to see other people treated badly, you know what I mean? – but she’s clear that doesn’t make it OK,”

In the end, American Hustle received a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDB and a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. With Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper joining the ride, the 2013 movie is available to stream on Paramount+.
